Chapter 55
At that moment, Aron was driving away from Evelyn’s neighborhood with the car’s windows rolled down. A black car suddenly cut in front of him, almost causing a collision.
Jerking to a stop, Aron scowled at the reckless driver. After a terse moment, the back window of the car rolled down, and a pudgy face with a too–smooth smile appeared.
The man smiled at him, “Oh, Mr. Quinn, what a coincidencel”
A chill went down Aron’s spine. He had no desire to chat.
But the man seemed unfazed by the silence, chuckling to himself before shooting a speculative look back towards where Aron had come from. “So, Mr. Quinn, didn’t win her over yet? Why the solo ride?” he teased.
What’s it to you?” Aron snapped, short on patience. He knew this guy all too well–David from the Thomas Group. Aron despised him with every fiber of his being. None of the Mercer family or their ilk were decent folk.
Aron tried to peel away, but the black car inched forward, effectively blocking his exit. David, sitting comfortably in his car. looked on with an unnerving smile that sent shivers down Aron’s spine despite the summer heat.
With a steely glare. Aron addressed the man blocking his way. “What’s the deal, Mr. Thomas?”
“No biggie. Just looking for some casual chat, David said with a smirk, scanning Aron from head to toe. Tm getting bored in my old age and thought you might entertain me for a bit. Care to indulge an old man?”
Aron remained unmoved, and raised his hand to honk the horn, signaling David to clear the way.
David suddenly stopped smiling, raised his hand, and clapped twice. Immediately, men in black surrounded them from all
sides.
Aron’s hand tightened on the wheel; pure frustration pumped through him. All he wanted to do was go out there and give David a piece of his mind, with his fists if necessary. But the odds weren’t in his favor. So he had to calm down for now.
Playing it cool, Aron smirked, ‘Is this how you invite people for a friendly talk, Mr. Thomas?”
David’s laughter echoed, a clear hint that he got Aron to play by his rules. I’m all about sincerity, David gloated. “You’ll come to see that
Aron held his tongue and waited until David’s signal sent the goons away, and then spoke up with a frown. “Lead the way. Mr. Thomas.
With a self–satisfied wave, David signaled for Aron to follow him Aron drove on, each mile taking them deeper into suburban outskirts. His frown deepened–David’s motives remained a mystery. After a two–hour trek, they pulled up to an eerie, isolated mountainside.
Stepping out of the car, Aron’s eyes were met with the desolate landscape. David, already waiting, flashed a gold–toothed grin as Aron approached. “Mr. Quinn, got any interest in the weapons Caleb’s cooking up?” David asked.
A realization hit Aron, “You’re behind that text?”
Always looking out for you,” David chuckled, his smile broadering. “Especially when it’s about profit.”
“You think Caleb’s arms deal is profitable? Aron countered, his stance firm. He made a move to leave, but the moment he lifted his foot, several imposing figures emerged, blocking any chance of a quick exit.
Aron whipped in head around to catch David eyeing him with sang look. “Mr. Thomas, don’t you think you’re crossing a line here?

David’s eyes popped wide, as if Aron’s words had struck a chord of mock surprise. He shook his head, the disapproval
