Chapter 54
Stepping out of the elevator. Evelyn’s eyes landed on Calch loitering by her door. She tensed up, confusion knitting her brows. “Caleb? What are you doing here?”
Caleb turned around and looked at her intensely, with anger in his eyes. Leaning against the wall, he sneered, his hands in his pockets and his long, straight legs crossed.
Every time he thought about the scene where Evelyn and Aron were sitting in the car, he felt uncomfortable.
He snapped, a mocking sneer twisting his lips. “So what. I can’t stop by? Or were you hoping Aron would be the one waiting?”
For a second. Evelyn was at a loss for words “Aron has nothing to do with this, okay?”
“Oh. Aron‘ now, is it? That’s pretty intimate. Where’s your precious Aron tonight? Too busy to keep you company?” Each word dripped with scom, prompting Evelyn to stamp her foot in irritation.
Giving him an exasperated look, she fished out her keys to unlock the door. “You’re crazy! she declared, but as she swung the door open, Caleb wedged his hand against it, halting its closure.
Caleb propped one hand against the door, preventing Evelyn from closing it.
Evelyn said angrily, “Let go.”
His eyes bore into hers, a challenge in his voice. “You really can stand even looking at me, huh? Bet if it was Aron here instead, you’d be all smiles, inviting him right in.”
Her patience fraying. Evelyn locked eyes with him, ice in her voice. “Yes, if Aron was here, he’d be welcome. Unlike you Evelyn frowned and glanced at Caleb’s hand. “I said, let go! Caleb
Caleb’s frustration boiled over, but the sight of the familiar interior stopped him short, turning his anger into a harsh laugh, He’d been here only a few times, but he’d picked our most of the decor himself

He wasn’t entirely wrong–his name was still on the deed. They were married when his mom Jasmine gave Evelyn the keys. Evelyn had gotten used to coming here now and then, but after their split, she hadn’t considered how inappropriate it might be to keep using the place.
Caleb himself seemed to be taken aback by his own words. The anger–fueled rant had brought up something he hadn’t thought about in a while, and it left both of them standing there, the weight of the shared past hanging between them
Evelyn went quiet at Caleb’s words, her gaze locking on him. She dropped the door issue and headed straight for the bedroom without a word.
Standing at the door for a long time, Caleb finally walked into the bedroom. He watched Evelyn squatting on the ground, taking clothes out of the wardrobe one by one.
“What are you doing?” he asked, but she continued in silence, packing her belongings with a focus that shut everything else

He stood there, watching the rhythmic motion of her packing, the rustle of fabric the only sound in the stillness of the
As Evelyn crouched there, his earlier words replayed in her mine. All those times she’d come here during their live–year marriage when he wasn’t a
