Chapter 47
The two quickly arrived at the Quinn residence. No one had lived there for many years, and wild grasses had grown everywhere in the yard, but because large round stones had been laid from the courtyard gate to the villa’s main entrance, it was not overwhelmed.
Evelyn was filled with shock. “Aron, I’m afraid it’s a bit difficult to clean this up!”
Aron found himself at a loss, staring at the lonely silhouette of the villa. He cleared his throat to shake off the feeling and stepped up to push open the gate. The hinges groaned, sending up clouds of dust that revealed the stark emptiness within.
Key in hand, he paused at the threshold, reeling from the sight. It was as if thieves had stripped the house bare. Then reality hit him–he’d been the one to sell off everything in a scramble for cash after his parents tragic passing forced him to flee Glovia penniless.
Evelyn stepped inside and stopped short, taken aback by the hollow space. Searching for the right words, she finally managed. “Aron, why don’t we start cleaning downstairs?”
The Quinn residence was not very big, with only two stories. The first floor had a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom, while the second floor had only three bedrooms and a study,
Aron and Evelyn split the chores, and by the time they had cleaned up, night had already wrapped the place in darkness.
Hungry and tired, they decided to order takeout and quickly ate their dinner. With the clock pushing past ten, trekking all the way to South District Park to drive home felt like an ordeal. Wiped out, Evelyn confessed. I just want to hit the bed and crash
The next morning, sunlight spilled into the room and danced across Evelyn’s eyes, rousing her from sleep. She blinked in confusion at the unfamiliar surroundings, then remembered she was at the Quinn residence. Quick to get dressed, she opened her door and peeked across the hall–the opposite bedroom was tidy and empty.
With the early morning quiet lingering, she wondered if Aron had already stepped out. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the doorbell echoing from downstairs. Puzzled, she figured Aron might have ducked out and forgotten his keys.
Evelyn walked down the stairs with confusion. The doorbell rang a few times and then stopped. She opened the door, ready to tease Aron that he actually forgot to bring his keys.
However, the person standing outside the door turned out not to be Aron, but a young girl who looked to be in her early
twenties.
The young girl dressed in a light yellow dress with a floral pattern was probably about to leave since she saw that no one was answering the door.
“Hey. The sound of the door creaking open caught her off guard, and she whipped around in surprise. Her smile faltered slightly as she eyed Evelyn with clear annoyance. “Who are your
Evelyn watched, a chuckle brewing inside her. She wondered if this might be one of Aron’s admirers from back in the day. Both Aron and his older brother had been neighborhood heartthrobs with their striking features and boyish charm. And now, not even a full day after Aron’s return, here was this girl, showing up at his doorstep. This was dedication.
Finding the girl innocently cute, Evelyn couldn’t resist having a little fun. She put on a sugary sweet tone and teased, “Well, considering I’in the one who answered the door so early, who do you think I am?”
Just as expected, the question seemed to rule the girl, who bit her lip, her eyes clouding over with suspicion and a tinge of jealousy. “Are you Mr. Quinn’s girlfriend? she asked.

Evelyn shook her head seriously. “No.”
The girl’s jealousy waned, but suspicion got hook deeply. “Then what’s your relationship with him?”
Dragging it out for effect, Evelyn cooed, “Well… I am… his long–lost sister. Would you buy that?”
