Chapter 45
The security guard’s voice woke Evelyn up, and Evelyn immediately felt puzzled by his words.
She heard footsteps suddenly appear behind her. Turning her head, she saw Aron standing under a tree not far away, gazing distractedly at the residential area, just like her.
Evelyn, unable to clearly see Aron against the brightness of the sun, called out in surprise, Aron? What brings you here?” Though his features were obscured, she could sense the shift in his attention from the homes around them back to her.”
Aron, mastering the wave of anger that had initially risen in his eyes, allowed a look of profound longing to surface instead. He walked up slowly to stand beside her, his voice deepening with sincerity. “I noticed you seemed distracted, so I followed you here, he explained.
Aron took in the sight of the old neighborhood, noticing that not much had changed since his last visit. This part of town was originally a haven for the well-to-do, but these days it was mostly home to retirees.
It wasn’t surprising that the Forest Residences had earned a reputation as ‘Clovia’s Premier Retirement Spot. True to its moniker, the area was dotted with seniors and young kids, the under-ten crowd. Young adults, on the other hand, often opted to live closer to the city’s pulse, typically shying away from the slower pace of the South District.
The security guard spotted Evelyn and Aron lingering by the entrance and leaned out of his booth, keeping a cautious watch over the pair. He asked, a hint of suspicion in his voice. “Hey, you folks live around here? Are you visiting someone?”
Aron gazed into the distance at the residential area, but it was too far away to see clearly
He then took Evelyn’s hand and walked toward the security booth, asking Evelyn as they walked. “Evelyn, shall we go in and have a look together?”
Evelyn switched on her phone and glanced at the time.It was four o’clock in the afternoon, neither early nor too late.
Evelyn’s phone came to life in her hand, and she checked the time-4 PM, not too early and certainly not too late. She hesitated, her mind racing with the thought of seeing Brian, who had long since retired due to his walking difficulties and handed over the family business reins to Jason. She wondered if it was the end of their workday and whether they were even home. A bigger worry loomed: would they welcome her, or would it be a repeat of the cold treatment at the hospital, maybe, even being shooed away like an unwanted pest?
Caught up in her apprehensions, Evelyn barely noticed Aron clearing things up with the security guard. It was only when they started walking down the paved road of the residential area that she came to, giving Aron a puzzled look.
He had effortlessly convinced the guard that they were headed to his place. A quick ID check and they were in. Noticing her bewildered expression, Aron offered a reassuring smile and led her deeper into the community, towards the secluded villas that lay at its heart. He seemed to navigate her silent questions and the winding road with equal ease.
With a half-smile, Aron broke the silence. “My old place has been gathering dust for years. Figured td spruce it up since I’m sticking around Clusia for a while. Plus, it’s pretty convenient for just about everything
Evelyn felt the pull to visit her home, but the thought of barging in on Brian and Jason made her uneasy. Aron’s words only deepened her hesitation.
Aron saw that she was in a dilemma and raised his eyebrows slightly. “Evelyn? What’s wrong?”
Evelyn asked. “May I go to your house with you? Aron, I can clean up with you.”
Aron was taken aback. He thought that when Evelyn returned to Forest Residences, she would go to the Brin residence. However, Evelyn seemed to be in a difficult situation. Considering that he had followed her all the way, Evelyn seemed to
