Ava was feeling sky-high after Caleb’s promise. The tough times seemed small now. She snuggled up to Caleb, daydreaming of being Mrs. Mercer, and she couldn’t help but feel a sense of victory.
Caleb hugged Ava close, yet inside he was in turmoil. He’d made promises too easily and now wasn’t sure he wanted to keep them all. Deep down, there was someone he was itching to see, but he wouldn’t admit it to himself.
He took a deep breath to settle his thoughts and then gently laid Ava back on the bed. “Listen, Avy, I gotta run to a work meeting, but I’ll come check on you after, okay!” he said.
Ava, feeling safe and cared for, didn’t question his words at all. She nodded and watched him leave the room.

Caleb walked out of the hospital, feeling a sense of relief. Colin hurried over and opened the car door with respect.
“Mr. Mercer. I got in touch with Julius. You want to see him now? Colin asked.
There was a spark in Caleb’s eyes. He clenched his fist and then nodded. “Yeah, let’s go meet him. And, did you find out who Evelyn’s been hanging with?”

Caleb’s frown got deeper. Boaz was the underground godfather in Irinland with a strong grip on Normens’s shady business.
“Just checking, but Julius is Boaz’s youngest son, right?”
“That’s him, Mr. Mercer. Julius is actually Aron’s uncle, Colin said.
“And who’s top dog in Romaine now?” Caleb’s intentions were serious.
Colin knew this was sensitive. “Technically, it’s Aron. He’s the main guy for arms deals in Irinland. But Julius has been moving into Romaine from Sytos these last few years.”
Caleb nodded and looked off toward the docks. “And that crew David took into Romaine two months ago? Any update there
“About that, um, there’s not much clear yet. But it could be tied to that incident-when Mrs. Mercer- Colin quickly stopped and corrected himself under Caleb’s cold glance.” Well, mean, when Ms. Brin and Ms. Davenport were kidnapped”
Evelyn and Ava were snatched up. On the surface, it looked like payback for a guy who bit the dust while working for Caleb, But digging a little deeper, it turned out to be a whole lot murkier than that. Someone was pulling tie strings from the shadows, stirring up trouble for Caleb
After the police cleared out, Caleb’s men double-checked the scene and found a bomb almost buried under the floorboards. Whoever was behind it hadn’t banked on Caleb flipping the script and calling 911 so fast. The baddies didn’t even have time to finish burying their nasty surprise before the police showed up. The crooks, not keen on a run-in with Glowin’s inest, ditched their plan pronto,
