Chapter 8
The plane sheed through the sky, clouds zipping by the window like Evelyn’s memories floating away.
It felt like she had just closed her eyes for a minute, but when she opened them, she was Landing in a whole new world.
Dragging her suitcase, she stood lost and confused at the airport in Romaine the capital. Local people hustled past, barely glancing at her, the outsider who was hardly more than just another tourist in their bustling domain.
Tourist?
Evelyn let out a weary smile. Whether as Caleb’s wife for five years or now, as a wanderer in a strange place, she realized there wasn’t much of a distinction.
She had booked her hotel ahead of time. By the time she made it there, it was smack in the middle of the day, and the place was quiet with only a few guests milling about. A staff member escorted Evelyn to her room and handed her a Romaine city map with a friendly flourish.
Bone–tired, she could only offer a weary smile as the enthusiastle staff detailed the must–see local spots.
Once she settled in. Evelyn collapsed onto the bed. She stared out the window at the special local houses and felt an ache, as if something vital was missing from her heart.
Could a change of scenery really give her the fresh start she needed?
She’d made sure to leave no loose ends back home. She would escape and die alone.
She’d canceled everything back home, except for the nest egg she’d put aside for her trip. Now in Romaine, she was truly on
her DWTL
The silence of the room suited a solitary soul just fine. Evelyn shut her eyes, relieved that there were no more non–stop business calls to field, and no more nights waiting on someone who would rather be anywhere but home.
Nights were long, and whatever was left of life was ticking away quickly, but even the lengthiest nights eventually yielded to the break of dawn.
The morning sunlight streamed in through the window, waking Evelyn from her slumber. She glanced at the clock–it was exactly 7 AM.
She hopped out of bed, quickly freshened up, and strolled downstairs to snag some breakfast. The hotel she was staying at was managed by an Irinland–Clusian, which made it popular among folks who shared a similar heritage.
Evelyn stepped out of the elevator and bumped right into someone heading the opposite way.
“Oof” she exclaimed.
“Are you okay, miss came a concerned voice from a tall guy towering over her.
Evelyn looked up. pasting on a sorry smile, and scooted over to make room. “I’m alright, just spaced out for a moment. My

The guy was all business from his crisp sut to his polished shoe He seemed like he was in a rush, probably just finished grabbing a quick breakfast. He glanced at his watch, then nodded at her with a half smile. It’s all good. Enjoy youE breakfast
Evelyn watched the man walk away, samething about hun tugging at her memory. But she let it go–her hometown was jam–packed with her familiar faces, sir must’ve seen him at souge event before

Patting it behind her. Evelyn quickly finished her meal and walked out into the charming streets, all lost. Her old life, all that gluter and glam from the jewelry scene, felt like ancient history now that her company was history. But here she was, starting fresh, ready to paint her future with the colors she knew so well,
But Evelyn couldn’t shake off her worries that easy-
“Ms. Brin, your health’s in pretty bad shape. All that bad stomach pain you’ve been having for years, the problems after losing your baby, and your hurt kidney–you had to know this stuff was hurting you bad.”
The clean, sharp smell of the hospital was stuck in her head as the doctor kept going, “You gotta take a break, ease off the gas. Keep away from the stress, for real.”
But Bobby, always looking out for her, jumped right in. That won’t do! The company can’t make it without Ms. Brin. Isn’t there something that can fix her up?”
He looked at Evelyn, his face all tight with worry. The business was her life’s work. Was she really ready to just walk away
from that!
Evelyn looked out at the distant chapel, a dove flying by. She had to admit she was not ready to leave her career.
