Caleb sneered, straightening his wrinkled suit. His voice was as cold as ice. “Evelyn, don’t pull the mom card on me. I’m so over this marriage!
Then he was gone, slamming the door behind him without even looking back.
In the next few days, Evelyn barely saw Caleb. Whenever she tried calling him, the line just kept beeping busy-He had blocked her number, for sure.
Before long, Caleb’s mom, Jasmine, gave her a call. “Evelyn, did you hear Ava’s back home? Look, you gotta keep Caleb away from her. Don’t let that Ava trick him, okay?”
Evelyn was stunned. “She’s back already?”
There was a pause on the other end. And Jasmine went on, “Yep, got in last week.”
Evelyn got it. That was why he wanted to bail on the marriage so fast.
She squeezed out a smile and said, “Well, Jasmine, L. She almost said she wanted out too.
She caught herself. Jasmine’s health had gone downhill ever since Caleb’s dad passed, and her heart was weak. If Evelyn dropped this bomb, she couldn’t live with the guilt.
Deep down, she knew Jasmine was the only one who really saw her for who she was, who had her back, no matter what. After a heavy silence, she finally said, “Tll take care of Caleb. Don’t you worry.”
After she hung up the phone, Evelyn felt really down. Everyone in Glovia was aware of how much Caleb couldn’t stand her. What was she going to do to get through to him?
She decided to try calling him anyway, this time with a different number.
The phone just kept ringing until Caleb finally picked up. “Yeah?” he said, in a voice that had none of its usual snark. To Evelyn, so used to his sarcasm, it sounded almost so nice that made her cry.
Maybe because she waited too long to say anything, he hung up.
Evelyn wiped away a tear and called back. This time, he answered right away.
Taking a breath, she blurted out, “We need to talk about splitting up.”
There was a pause before he replied, “Now you accept it?”
Evelyn sat on her bed and watched the snow start to fall outside. She put a hand on her stomach, which was still flat. With a sad sort of smile, she tried to make a deal. “Okay, I’ll agree to the divorce, but just one thing”
Caleb, who was fiddling with a pen, sounded kind of bored. “What’s that?”
He probably thought she was going to ask for something big, like fame or money.
Evelyn took a deep breath. “I want to have another baby.”
Her idea was, if she couldn’t keep him around, at least she could have his baby. And now was her chance to ask for it. Otherwise, she might never get to make it
Caleb lost it, threw his pen down, and shouted, “Evelyn, are you out of your mind? Now? Right after an abortion? Are you really that desperate?”

That hurt Evelyn, but she kept up her smile. The doctor said I can try again in half a year. As soon as I’m expecting. I’ll sign the papers
But Caleb cut her off, “No way!”
The next morning. Evelyn went back to the hospital to check in: The doctor told her what she had heard before. She thanked him, took the prescription he handed her, and walked over to the pharmacy.
he was reading the prescription when she bumped right into someone. A gentle voice said, “Oops, sorry.”
Evelyn barely glanced up, ready to comfort the girl, but was brought up short. It was Ava, with just a bit of makeup and a mask, but still easy to recognize.
Before she could say anything, someone pushed her from behind. Evelyn stumbled and fell to the floor. When she looked up, she saw Caleb glaring down at her!
“Evelyn, have you no shame? Acting like nothing’s wrong? You better stay away from Avy. If you hurt her. I swear I’ll make you pay!
