Chapter 4 Hoping for a Fresh Start
Kyler always obeyed Nathaniel’s words without question. That’s why, even though they noticed Sofia entering the room earlier, they didn’t make a move.
Since Nathaniel woke up from surgery, he had a tiny earpiece in his ear. It allowed his trusted men to hear his commands anytime.
These men had been Nathaniel’s loyal friends for over ten years. They wanted revenge for Nathaniel’s recent accident.
However, Nathaniel had already ordered them not to expose themselves, no matter what they saw in his room, unless he specifically told them to.
Still, Kyler and his crew were suspicious of this woman sneaking into Nathaniel’s room, even though she was the woman Older Mr. Hart brought to be their leader’s wife.
“Sir, if you don’t like her, I can have someone kill her right now,” Kyler suggested.
Nathaniel frowned, his eyes darkening. “We live in a society governed. by laws. We are civilized people!”
Kyler fell silent, feeling something was off.
Their leader had never emphasized being civilized when dealing with enemies.
Yet, Kyler sensed danger and didn’t dare say more. “Sir, you should rest.”

Nathaniel said nothing more, just stared at the ceiling.

He wanted to know the woman’s intentions, who sent her, and how she was connected to those who wanted him dead.
Unaware that Nathaniel had noticed her actions and now suspected her, Sofia returned to her room and immediately laid out a stack of white cardboard sheets on the floor to start drawing.
From memory, she sketched all the instruments she had seen.
This was a clumsy but necessary method.
Sofia couldn’t immediately operate Nathaniel’s instruments because she hadn’t seen his medical records or understood the devices well enough. Pressing buttons randomly could hurt Nathaniel.
So, Sofia decided not to touch the instruments until she fully
understood how they worked. Instead, she would make a mini version herself.
Tonight, she had memorized all the functions of the instruments and drawn the blueprints. Tomorrow, she would buy the materials and start making them herself.
Sofia had another talent: she could accurately replicate things she had
seen.
Though she couldn’t invent, she excelled at copying.
Unfortunately, since returning to the Schneider family, she hadn’t had a chance to use this talent.
By the time she finished drawing, it was morning. Sofia folded her drawings and put them in her backpack.

She had surgery this morning and needed someone to buy the materials for her.

So, Sofia left for the hospital two hours earlier than usual, turned into an alley near the hospital, and stopped at an ordinary–looking café.
The café’s owner, a woman in her forties, warmly greeted her. “You’re here! Latte and croissant again?”
Sofia nodded and sat at a table near the kitchen.
Casually chatting with the owner, she said, “Malia, please heat the croissant a bit more.”
Malia smiled and quickly brought her breakfast.
Sofia glanced at the noticeably larger croissant compared to other customers‘ pastries but said nothing.
After breakfast, Sofia paid and said to Malia, “I’ll use the back door today to buy some things.”
Usually, Sofia entered and exited through the front door, which was conveniently close to the hospital entrance.
Only when she needed to buy something from the small supermarket in the back did she ask Malia for permission to use the back door through the kitchen.
Malia nodded. “Go ahead, no need to tell me every time. I’ve told you that.”
Sofia smiled, quickly went into the kitchen, and took out her drawings and a detailed list from her bag, stashing them in a cupboard.

Without stopping, she went to the supermarket, bought sugar, and returned to the hospital.
Everything went smoothly, without any hitches.
After hearing Kyler’s report, Nathaniel grew more suspicious.
“Mr. Hart, Miss Schneider does go to that café before every surgery. Even though she had breakfast with Older Mr. Hart this morning, she still had a croissant. Maybe it’s just her way of boosting herself,” Kyler explained.
Nathaniel’s frown deepened.
“Maybe?” His gaze turned to a spot on the chandelier. His voice grew cold. “Kyler, since when did you start making judgments based on speculation?”
Even through the screen, Kyler could sense his boss’s displeasure. “I apologize, Mr. Hart. It was my mistake.”
Nathaniel ordered, “Keep watching.”
“Yes,” Kyler replied.
Sofia’s surgery was simple and took only half an hour to complete.
She wasn’t scheduled to work today; she was just filling in for another doctor who had an emergency.
After the surgery, Sofia left the hospital.
She went to a mall, shopping like any other woman, buying clothes and shoes she liked.

She spent the afternoon shopping until after four o’clock, then slipped into a mall restroom to change into her new clothes and shoes, along with items someone had left there earlier.
After that, she hailed a cab back to the Hart family.
Coincidentally, Older Mr. Hart emerged from Nathaniel’s room and noticed Sofia’s bags. He casually asked, “Went shopping?”
“Yes, Grandfather,” Sofia replied. “Just getting some new clothes, hoping for a fresh start.”
Older Mr. Hart didn’t seem displeased, simply suggesting, “Go spend some time with Nathaniel later. I hope you’ll take the initiative to bond with him.”
