Chapter 76: Unable to Say Goodbye
“It’s not too bad. I got hurt, but I was too embarrassed to go to the hospital alone, so I thought you might have some medicine here…”
The more Layla spoke, the more embarrassed she became, her face turning red.
Julian instantly understood what was going on from her words. He had her sit on the sofa while he went to find the medicine kit, but after checking everything, he realized none of the medicines were suitable.
“I looked through all of these, but none of them can be used for that kind of injury,” Julian said, frowning. He should have known; it’s not like he’d have such specific medicine at home.
Hearing this, Layla felt even more embarrassed, her eyes welling up with tears. “Then… maybe I should just go to the hospital.”
It was her first time dealing with something like this, and she felt too shy to handle it.
Julian, feeling guilty, sighed. After all, this situation was partially his fault. “I’ll take you,” he said.
Layla looked up at him in surprise. “But… that doesn’t seem right. I should go on my own.”
“There’s nothing wrong with it. Besides, I don’t have anything else to do right now. I can meet Adam and the others later.”
Julian picked up his car keys, explaining that whenever they went out, it was either to drink or on the way to drink. So being late wouldn’t be a big deal. Adam and the others would understand.
Layla nodded, then cautiously asked, “After the hospital, can I go with you to meet them?”
“Sure, I’ll let them know,” Julian agreed without hesitation.
After they left the hospital, Layla felt even more embarrassed, wishing the ground would open up and swallow her. Julian, walking beside her, stayed silent for a while before apologizing, “I’m sorry.”
Layla quickly shook her head. How could she blame Julian?
That situation had happened because she had played a role too, and honestly, she thought it wasn’t a bad thing.
“There’s nothing to apologize for. In fact, I’m happy to be with you.” Her words sounded naïve, but to some, they might have seemed foolish.
Regardless, Julian, seeing her like
this, felt his resolve waver a little.
She seemed too carefree, and Julian didn’t want to get involved with someone like that. People like her tended to take things seriously.
The breakup he had been ready to suggest was now stuck in his throat. He didn’t dare to think about how upset Layla would be if he mentioned breaking up now. She would surely cry.
“The timing’s right, Let’s head out,” Julian said.
He had already called Adam and the others, telling them he’d bring Layla, so it was time to go meet them. But Layla still seemed confused and looked at Julian, not understanding what was next.
“Where are we going?” she asked.
“When we came, you said you wanted to join me to meet Adam and the others. They’re waiting for us. Let’s go.”
“Oh, okay.”
Layla obediently followed him.
Inside the private room, the music was deafening..
Adam swirled his glass of wine repeatedly, as if he didn’t have the mood to drink.
Everyone around was talking about various things, their voices blending with the music.
“Why are you acting all serious? There aren’t even any girls here for you to impress,” William teased, laughing as if he wanted to kick Adam for showing off.
They had been friends for years, so what was Adam trying to prove?
Was he interested in one of the girls here?
“What do you mean? I’m trying a new flirting technique just learned. Let me tell you how it works…” Adam began.
“Spare me. I’m not interested in your tricks. Besides, it’s embarrassing. I rely on my natural charm,” William said, moving aside, clearly annoyed by Adam’s antics. It was just too much.
Adam rolled his eyes. William would never understand his charm anyway.
But what was taking Julian so long? He had called him earlier, and Julian said he was on the way, yet t hadn’t arrived. Normally, Julian was the first to show up at these kinds of gatherings.
Even though he had recently had a falling out with Chloe, that shouldn’t have made him this late.
William checked the time. “I’ve already called him several times. Why is he still not here? It’s been ages, he complained. Julian was usually the fastest to arrive.
William had no idea, and neither did Adam. If Adam knew, he’d have called again to hurry him up.
Suddenly, William remembered something. “By the way, did you invite Daniel?”
“Are you crazy? Of course I invited him. He’s part of the group. Why wouldn’t I?” Adam responded.
William widened his eyes in disbelief. Adam was bold for inviting him, especially after what happened last time.
“You’re really something. If they start fighting again, you’ll be the one breaking it up. I’m not getting involved,” William warned.
Adam was speechless. Was this what friendship was? Not even willing to help in a tough situation?
“Relax. I’m not that dumb. I already talked to him, and he said he’s busy and won’t come. That’s why I invited Julian. I know those two can’t be in the same room right now. Do I really need you to remind me?” Adam said, exasperated.
They used to hang out together, but now Julian and Daniel couldn’t be in the same place. It made things awkward.
Just as they were talking about Julian, the door to the private room opened. Julian entered, with Layla following behind him.
Adam was about to greet them but stopped mid–sentence when he saw Layla.
He had expected Julian, but seeing Layla with him at this moment left him speechless.
