Chapter 71: Catching Feelings
When Daniel heard Adam’s question, he just smiled and calmly took a sip of his coffee, his relaxed demeanor making Adam anxious.
“Come on, answer me. Are you serious about this? If you’re just playing around, then leave her alone. Chloe is a good girl, and it wouldn’t be right to drag her into something with your half–hearted intentions,” Adam said, clearly worried. But then, in the next moment, he realized maybe he didn’t need to be so
concerned.
“Actually, even if you’re serious, it won’t matter. From what I see, Chloe doesn’t seem interested in you at all. There’s no chance she’ll accept you. The relationship between you and Julian is the biggest hurdle. Even if the two of you are no longer friends, she won’t cross that line. You and Chloe live in completely
different worlds.”
Adam finished his reasoning, feeling like he had made a very valid point.
There was no way Chloe would accept Daniel, so Adam figured he didn’t need to worry too much.
Daniel, who had been sipping his coffee calmly, stopped mid–sip when he heard Adam’s words. He frowned slightly and looked at Adam.
“What do you mean by that? Why are you so sure that my feelings for Chloe aren’t genuine? I agree Chloe’s a good girl, but does that automatically make me some terrible person?” Daniel asked, his tone
more serious.
Adam’s mouth twitched a little. “Come on, don’t overestimate yourself. First off, Chloe isn’t into your type at all. She may not know how wild you are behind the scenes, but I sure do. Anyone who digs a little will find out just how much you’ve played around. Just that fact alone means she’ll never get close to you.
“Second, like I said before, the relationship you had with Julian is a dealbreaker. Even if you’re not friends. anymore, the fact that you once were is enough to make Chloe turn away from you. So you might as well give up.”
Adam was trying to be polite, but in reality, if he wanted to be blunt, he could have said something harsher, like Chloe being too discerning to settle for someone like Daniel.
Daniel was starting to get annoyed by Adam’s persistence.
Seeing Adam’s curiosity light up with gossip, Daniel finally responded, “I probably started liking her when I first met her.”
Adam was surprised by this response.
He blinked and tried to recall when they had all first met. If he remembered correctly, the first time they all got together was shortly after Chloe and Julian had started dating.
Which meant Daniel had started liking Chloe when she was just a few months into her relationship with Julian.
Adam couldn’t help but gasp. A moment ago, he was half–jokingly accusing Daniel of being shameless. but now he realized Daniel really was that kind of guy!
She had just started dating his friend, and he was already interested in her? And to think he had held onto those feelings for so many years–it was a bit unbelievable.
“Wow, I thought you were one of the good guys, but you’re really something else! How could you have been eyeing your friend’s girlfriend from the start? At the time, they were so in love,” Adam said, his face filled with mock disgust. Daniel rolled his eyes.

“You’re the one who’s crazy. If I really wanted to do something, would I have waited all these years? While they were dating, I didn’t do a thing. Did you ever hear me say a single bad word about them? Now that they’re no longer together, I can pursue the person I like–is there anything wrong with that?”
Technically, Daniel hadn’t done anything wrong. He hadn’t interfered in their relationship, waiting until Chloe and Julian had broken up before making his move. In that sense, he had acted like a gentleman–at least, outwardly.
“But the fact that you were interested in your friend’s girlfriend from the beginning is still wrong!” Adam exclaimed loudly, convinced he was making an excellent point.
Daniel was too exasperated to continue arguing with him.
“Look, liking someone isn’t something you can control You remember back in high school when you had a crush on that girl? You were obsessed with her, even though she had a boyfriend. Why didn’t you tell yourself to cool off back then?” Daniel said, bringing up Adam’s high school crush. Back then, Adam had been head over heels for a girl who was already in a relationship.
He had spent days drunk over her and had even tried to pursue her.
If Adam hadn’t thought of himself as being shameless back then, why was he so quick to call Daniel that now? After all, Daniel hadn’t acted on his feelings at the time.
Thinking back to his high school days, Adam felt a bit embarrassed. He hadn’t expected Daniel to throw that in his face. Still, Daniel had a point–Adam had done things that were far more reckless.
“Sigh, love is complicated, isn’t it? Back then, I was so infatuated I couldn’t think straight,” Adam admitted, trying to save face.
“You couldn’t control your feelings then, so why should I be able to now? And don’t you think I’ve handled this situation better? I didn’t sabotage their relationship when they were dating. Isn’t that more ethical than what you did?” Daniel retorted.
