hapter 69: Clearing the Air
fter they had dinner, Wyatt was ready to head back to the lab to continue his experiments, so he opped Chloe off downstairs without going up with her.
he rain had already stopped by then, but as she walked along the street, a gust of wind made her feel a t chilly. Chloe shivered and instinctively pulled her clothes tighter around her, only to realize she was ill wearing Wyatt’s coat.
loe sighed to herself, remembering how Wyatt had only been wearing a sweater when he drove her >me. With the heater on in the car, he hadn’t seemed cold, but now she hoped he hadn’t caught a chill alking without his coat in this weather.
er hope wasn’t enough, though, because the next day, when she saw Wyatt, he had a stuffy nose and as sneezing constantly.
eeing this, Chloe couldn’t help but rub her own nose in sympathy. Apparently, even someone like Wyatt
asn’t immune to the cold.
m… I took your coat to the cleaners. I’ll bring it back to you as soon as it’s ready,” Chloe said, feeling a tle embarrassed. Wyatt certainly didn’t lack for clothes, but knowing he’d gotten sick because of her ade her feel a bit guilty.
yatt cleared his throat, his voice thick with congestion. “No rush.”
e’d almost forgotten about leaving his coat with Chloe when he dropped her off the night before. But it asn’t a big deal–he had other jackets. Still, he made a mental note to take a few more outfits to the lab, st in case he needed them.
earing Wyatt’s congested voice, Chloe felt even more embarrassed. If it weren’t for her, he probably ouldn’t have gotten sick. Luckily, she had prepared for this.
he turned around and came back holding a thermos and a small bag of medicine. “I didn’t know you’d aught a cold. I actually prepared some food for you yesterday, but you never came back, so I kept it. ere are some cold meds too. Don’t forget to take them.”
yatt was one of those people who rarely got sick, but when he did, it hit him hard and took a long time recover. He was always so busy with work that he often didn’t even have time to take care of himself, uch less remember to take medicine.
yatt was surprised that Chloe had gone to the trouble of bringing him food and medicine. He glanced at e items she was holding and smiled. “Thank you, that’s very kind of you.”
lo need to thank me. I wrote the times you need to take the meds on the packaging, so don’t get too
ught up in work and forget. And really, I feel bad–if it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t have caught a cold.”
loe’s tone grew more apologetic as she spoke, but Wyatt just nodded again.
e glanced at the time. If he didn’t leave soon, he’d be running late. Chloe noticed him checking his atch and realized he was in a hurry, so she didn’t say more. As long as he remembered to take his edicine, she’d be satisfied.
fter saying their goodbyes, they both went off to continue their day. Chloe returned home to bury herself work. She had a few papers to read, and the experiment reports she was working on still needed a lot her time and effort.
ately, she’d been thinking a lot about how she could quickly get up to speed on the equipment in the lab. he had also borrowed several books from her professor, some of which were in German, which made

them difficult to read.
That meant she needed to focus even more on her studies; otherwise, she’d start to fall behind.
Once she was completely immersed in her work, time passed quickly. Suddenly, her phone rang, interrupting her flow of thought. Chloe was a bit annoyed by the disturbance. Without checking who was calling, she answered.
“I’m sorry about what happened yesterday. I just wanted to explain things to you in person. Some of what happened wasn’t my intention.”
Before Chloe could even respond, the voice on the other end launched into an apology. It took her a moment to process, but then she realized it was Daniel calling.
His call wasn’t entirely unwelcome, though. Chloe had been planning to talk to him anyway.
“That’s fine. I have something to discuss with you as well. I was thinking of bringing it up later, but since you’ve called, we might as well set a time to meet and talk.”
After they arranged a time and place, Chloe hung up. As she returned to her studies, images of Julian’s angry and mocking face from the previous day flashed through her mind, making her feel uncomfortable again.
She shook the thought off and refocused on her work.
They decided to meet at the same café as last time. It was close to the university, and since they’d met there before, it seemed like a convenient choice. Just like before, Daniel arrived early.
He sat at the same table as last time, though his demeanor was completely different now. Chloe noticed the friendly smile he gave her as she approached.
Daniel was undeniably handsome, which made him stand out. Chloe wasn’t surprised when she noticed some girls at a nearby table stealing glances at him, unable to look away.
She had always known that Julian’s circle of friends was full of good–looking people. Seeing the girls‘ reactions to Daniel didn’t surprise her at all.
She ignored them and sat down across from Daniel.
“Another latte, like last time?” Daniel asked, his tone friendly. But instead of getting straight to the point, he started with a casual question about coffee. This time, however, Chloe wasn’t in the mood to indulge
him.
