I didn’t touch the pumpkin milk drinks and waited to see what the waiter would do.
But before the waiter could move, Jace picked up both glasses. He set one in front of me and held the other, turning to Lindey. “Mom, your blood sugar’s high. I asked them to make peanut milk for you instead.
Lindey looked like she wanted to argue, but Jace was already placing the second glass in front of Tanya.
Tanya gave him a weak, almost fragile smile.
She looked so pitiful that even I felt a little uncomfortable, and I was sure any guy watching would’ve been tempted to play the hero.
Lindey must’ve noticed too, because she didn’t say anything else.
Then the dishes started arriving, all my favorites. Lindey piled food onto my plate like I was incapable of serving myself, making it impossible to keep up.
Meanwhile, Jace and Tanya sat there like extras in the background, completely ignored.
1 felt embarrassed for them.
If I were in their place, I’d probably end up with a serious case of indigestion after this meal.
Lindey kept piling food onto my plate until I finally had to wave her off and excuse myself to the restroom,
I didn’t expect Jace to follow me out. “Keira, my mom is being too much.”
I gave him a small smile. “Then maybe you should talk to her.”
His face tightened. “She’s just standing up for you. You can’t be clueless about that.”
“I’m not,” I said flatly.
“Rea, you’ve moved on. Why are you still pushing my mom to go after Tanya?” Jace snapped. “I’ve told you before, I owe Tanya everything. The way my mom treats her just makes me feel even more guilty.”
“Jace Johnston,” I said, my voice turning cold, “do you really think you’re worth that kind of effort from
me?”
He hesitated, and I shot him a mocking smile. “The second I let go of you, you stopped being worth even a second of my time.”
“Rea,” he said softly, almost pleading. “I don’t believe you.”
“Then what do you believe?” I asked, my voice sharp. “Do you think this is all some act? That I’m still madly in love with you?” I fired off questions, one after another. “Jace, where do you get this confidence? My love is for people who actually deserve it. Do you think you deserve my love?”
He opened his mouth but couldn’t seem to find the words.
Oh, by the way, Tanya’s brother Brad… I don’t know what got into him, but he’s been trying to hit on me. He even sent white wild roses to my office,” I said, giving him a mocking smile.

Jace’s eyes widened. “When did this happen?”
“Today,” I replied, still smirking. “What do you think, Jace? Should I say yes to him?”
His jaw tightened. “I had no idea about this.”
“Then you’re still a decent human being,” I said coldly.
If he’d actually encouraged Brad, I would’ve felt like a total fool for loving him all those years.
“I’ll get to the bottom of this,” Jace muttered.
I didn’t say anything and turned toward the restroom.
“Rea,” he called out again, but I kept walking.
Still, I heard his voice behind me. “If I died one day, would you be sad?”
My heart clenched, a sudden heaviness filling my chest, but I didn’t stop or look back.
I wanted to snap, “You’ll find out after you die.”
But I bit my tongue. Some things are better left unsaid, especially to someone you once loved.
Three minutes later, I walked out of the restroom, and Jace was nowhere to be seen. I didn’t know if he’d gone back to the private room or just left.
Thinking about the awkwardness back in the room, I really didn’t want to go back. So I wandered over to the pond with the fountain, watching the water ripple and splash..
After a few minutes, I heard those footsteps I knew way too well. My heart jumped. No way–was that Hayden?
I looked up, and there he was. And right next to him–seriously, was that Ron?
