I stared out the window, red–eyed. The next second, fireworks exploded
outside. It was dazzlingly beautiful. I remembered Vanessa saying Trent would
set off fireworks for her.
Seeing me staring at the fireworks,
Trent said with tenderness.“You like this?
I’ll
get you a bigger, better one. What do
you think?”
He hugged me tightly, whispering.
I smiled bitterly, bravely blinking back my tears.
“Trent, I don’t like second–hand
ideas.”

He knew I was talking about
fireworks, still, his heart skipped a beat.
He suddenly panicked.

Trent went out early and came home
late in the next few days. No one knew

Trent’s eyes darkened, his Adam’s

After a few seconds, he put his phone
away.“Honey, I have to go. Work stuff.”
“I’ll take you there next time, okay?”
I looked into his eyes, then smiled. That smile made him uneasy. Then, I got
out of the car without a word.
Three seconds later, Trent’s car sped

condoms.
“Lily, you lost again. I’m pregnant, and he’s still so crazy about me… Can’t he
live without me?”
Vanessa’s tone was triumphant, but I didn’t reply. I was leaving; these things
couldn’t hurt me anymore.
For the next few days, Trent didn’t
come home. I didn’t ask.
Vanessa kept sending me pictures
slices of fruit, bags of luxury goods, home-
cooked meals… She was showing off how
much Trent loved her.
