Chapter 137
Austin frowned “The money doesn’t matter. I don’t care about
It was not that Austin didn’t care about the money, but he had made enough profit from it during those years.
Group
with his current funds, he could easily buy back the shares of the Lewis Gr
But the Lewis family didn’t form a firm connection with the Reed family, and the shares were almost worthless,
“So, what do you want Courtney asked, watching Austin to see what tricks he had up his sleeve.
“I heard the higher–ups intend to interview the hospital and hold a ceremony for you. It’s about your medical team’s return from the peacekeeping mission and your donation of the money”
Austin looked into Courtney’s eyes, frowning as he spoke, “Courtney, when the city officials are present, please don’t say anything reckless. You need to understand that the connections above are complicated”
Courtney speed. “And then what? Why not just say what you want?”
“Since half of that money should’ve been mine, I’d like you to mention me during the ceremony. At the very least, it’s the money we both gave, supporting the healthcare cause.”
Austin looked at Courtney, hoping she would agree.
Courtney laughed. “Why? I don’t think you would let me donate that money if it had been up to you. Then why is it a joint donation by both of us? That money is rightfully mine because you’ve already signed the divorce papers.”
“Courtney Austin was annous. “We spent so many years together. Do you have to separate things so clearly from me? All you need to say is that the donation was from both of us, even just for old times‘ sake”
“Old times Austin, don’t mistake me” Courtney laughed as she looked at Austin. “Do you think I’m as easy to fool as I was five years ago? How you treat me is how I’ll treat you. I’ve told you this back when we were together,”
Austin frowned, clenching his fists, “Courtney, it’s just a simple matter. The higher I climb in the hospitall, the better I can protect you. This society is all about gaining status and wealth. My promotion would benefit you too. Why can’t you see that?”
Austin seemed worried. “James has all the power now. He could take of you easily. Look at Jay, stuck in the emergency room, working nonstop. He’s going to wear himself out eventually.
“Just a few days ago, a young nurse in the ER died from a heart attack Life is delicate. Only if I can I keep you safe. Do you get it?”
Courtney stood still, taking a deep breath as she seemed to understand why Jay signed up again.
“Dr. Gilbert, you keep striving in your world of fame and fortune. Good luck,” Courtney said as she walked p
past Austin, not even turning back as she left.
Austin looked at Courtney with frustration. “Courtney, I didn’t expect you to be so concerned about money. Do you forget how I looked after your parents during those two years?”
“You think you’re a devoted son in law,” Courtney finally snapped, turning around angrily, “Just because you looked after my parents for two years, I didn’t ask you for the house. How much appreciation the house has gotten these y years?
“And did I ever ask you for any of the insurance payouts you got with my parents? Austin, you should have a conscience.

“Where did all the valuable things in my parents‘ house go? Where did the jewelry go after the fire? Where did my dad’s collection of antiques, calligraphy, and paintings end up?”
Courtney’s voice was filled with anger. “Do you need me to lay out everything for you?”
Courtney hadn’t mentioned these things because her parents hadn’t thought to secure their assets or get home insurance. She knew these valuables existed, and Austin know too. But without evidence, it would just lead to endless bickering.
Courtney was already too tired to argue with Austin anymore. All she wanted was a quick divorce.

Austin stood there stunned, unable to say a word, thinking. “Jessica did take those valuables back to our hometown, and she even hid th Courtney’s mom.”
Austly had nothing to say,
It was by marrying Courtney that Austin became who he was now.
“Courtney. I’m sorry.
- y. I couldn’t bear to see you with someone like Hayden. I was afraid he’d ruin you.” Austin was ashamed but eager to save his
reputation.
Courtney looked at Austin and gave a weak smile. “I never thought a day would come when your existence would be the cause and excuse for me to fall in love with someone else.”
Courtney thought, ‘Thanks to Austin, I now find Hayden appealing in every aspect. Except for being a bit sharp–tongued and chatty, he’s better than Austin in every other way!
Austin looked at Courtney in disbelief.

“Yes, because of you, I’m grateful I met him in South Weidan. Without him, I would likely have been driven insane or ended up Courtney laughed at Austin as she turned to leave.
“Courtney! You can’t be in love with him. You’re lying, right?” Austin seemed broken down.
He couldn’t accept that Courtney was in love with someone else, hypocritically striving to protect his fragile ego.
