‘I’m sorry, Silas. I can’t marry you. We’re done. I don’t love you anymore.”
She walked away, her steps firm and resolute.
“Amy! No! Please! I’ll be good to you! I’ll buy you all the sticky buns you
want! Jewelry, houses, anything! Just stay with me!” He pleaded, his voice
cracking.
But she didn’t look back. He reached for her, his hand closing on empty air.
Even the rings were gone.
She didn’t want him. Not his love, not anything.
“Amy…Amy…” he whimpered, his face pale and clammy, his lips bloodied
from biting back a sob.
His grandfather watched him, his eyes filled with worry. He sighed. His
assistant had finally tracked down Amelia’s new contact information.
“Hello, Amelia? This is Silas’s grandfather. We met at your wedding.”
Amelia, who had just finished tending to a guest, was caught off guard.“Mr.
Sterling, what can I do for you? If this is about Silas, I’m not interested in getting
back together.” It had been weeks since Silas’s last attempt to contact her. She’d
hoped he’d finally given up. Now his grandfather was involved? She felt a surge
of anger.

Mr. Sterling’s voice was weak, but firm.“Amelia, I know Silas wronged you.
But he’s sick. I’m not asking for your forgiveness. Just come see him. Give him
closure. I promise, I won’t let him bother you again. I’m begging you, as an old
man.”
Amelia hesitated. “I’m sorry. I’m happy now. I can’t go back. If I do, will I be
able to leave again? I don’t know. The Sterling family is powerful. I’m just an
ordinary person. Please, let me be. He loved Bethany. He’ll move on. I’m not the
only one, and no one will ever be the only one for him. He’s just…obsessed. He’ll
get over it. Given time.”
Mr. Sterling sighed. He’d tried. Silas had made his bed and now had to lie in
- it. “Very well. If you have any lingering affection for him, come see him. If not, let‘
s pretend this conversation never happened.”
“Thank you, Mr. Sterling.”
After the call, Mr. Sterling sent her a video. Silas, unconscious in a hospital
bed, his face pale and drawn.
Amelia was shocked. He’d wasted away in just a few months. But she felt
nothing. No pity, no remorse. Her love for him was buried back in Boston.
She wouldn’t
go
back. He had plenty of people to take care of him. Her
presence wouldn’t change anything.
