“The Unkept Promise) Chapter 3
A sharp pain pierced Amelia’s chest. She gasped, struggling to breathe.
Alarmed, Silas rushed to her side. “Amy! What’s wrong?” His concern
seemed genuine, as if her pain was his own. But this man, who claimed to love
her so deeply, was living a lie.
“It’s nothing,” she choked out.“Just a stitch in my side.”
He gently rubbed her chest, making sure she was okay. Then, he insisted on
taking her home.
On the drive back, he tried to cheer her up with jokes and stories. But
nothing could lift the heavy weight in her chest. She stared out the window,
watching the scenery blur past.
“Amy,” he asked hesitantly, “did I do something wrong?”
“No,” she finally said. “I was just thinking about a TV show I watched.”
He seemed relieved. “What show?”
She turned to face him, her gaze steady. “The husband loved his wife very
much. But then he fell out of love and kept it a secret.” She held his
gaze,
searching his face for any flicker of guilt.“Silas,” she asked softly, “what if you fell
out of love with me one day?”

Never!” he interrupted, his voice sharp.“Amy, you’re the love of my life. Even if every other man in the world cheats, I never would. I can’t live without
you.”
His words were like daggers to her heart. He can’t live without me, but he’s
still with her.
Before she could respond, his phone rang. He hesitated, about to decline the call, but Amelia pushed his hand away. “Answer it.”
He obeyed. The voice on the other end was clear in the quiet car.“Silas, come
on out, man! The guys are all here. Just waiting for you.”
Silas started to refuse. “I’m putting Amy to bed. Gotta go.”
‘Dude, don’t be a whipped husband! It’s been ages since we’ve hung out.”
“Yeah, man. It’s supposed to be “bros before hoes,‘ not ‘no bros with the wife.”
You’re taking this way too far.*
Silas covered the mouthpiece. “Keep it down, will you? I told you, my wife
comes first. I’m staying with her.”
They wouldn’t give up. One by one, they took turns trying to persuade him.
Finally, Amelia spoke. “Go ahead and meet up with them. You haven’t seen
them in a while.”

Silas still looked reluctant, but she insisted. He compromised.“Then come
with me. If you’re not going, I’m not going.”
The voices on the other end chimed in.“Mrs. Sterling, come join us! It’ll be
jung
“Yeah, Mrs. Sterling, please come! Silas won’t come without you.”
Amelia agreed. Silas, finally appeased, drove to the bar.
As soon as he opened the door to the private room, he saw his friends surrounded by a dozen women. His face hardened. He turned to leave.
His friends, realizing their mistake, shooed the women away.“Go, go, go!
Scram!”
Once the women were gone, one of his friends clapped him on the shoulder.” Silas, you haven’t changed a bit. No other woman can get near you except your
wife.”
Silas shrugged him off, brushing off imaginary dust.“I’m a married man. I have to give Amy a sense of security. What do you know? You’re not even
married.”
The room erupted in laughter, teasing glances directed at Amelia.
Despite being out with his friends, Silas focused all his attention on Amelia.

When someone lit a cigarette, he glared until it was extinguished.“Amy doesn’t
like the smell of smoke.” He refused all offers of drinks.“Amy doesn’t like the
smell of alcohol on me.” When someone started singing karaoke, he
frowned.“Turn it off. Amy likes it quiet.”
He declined every invitation to join in, content to peel and slice fruit for Amelia, his hands moving with surprising dexterity. He presented her with a bowl of perfectly prepared fruit.“Amy, eat up.”
Noticing her thin dress and the low temperature of the air conditioning, he took off his jacket and draped it over her shoulders.“Amy, is that better? Are you
still cold?”
His friends groaned.“Silas, man, you’re so whipped!”
