Chapter 21
Avery handed the keys to Delcan, who took them and drove off. Howard then led her and Joshua toward Abigail’s room.
Even from a distance, Avery could hear Molly’s heart–wrenching sobs. She rolled her eyes. If one didn’t know any better, one would think Abigail had actually died.
Upon entering the room, she wrinkled her nose slightly. Abigail lay pale–faced on the bed while Molly sat by her side. Both of them were clutching each other and weeping. To any outsider, it would’ve seemed like a scene of touching mother–daughter devotion.
Meanwhile, Clyde stood by, clearly bored and exasperated–until he spotted Joshua. The irritation on his face morphed into fear, and he forced a strained smile.
“Uncle Joshua, what brings you here?”
Joshua gave him an icy glance. “Do I need to report my whereabouts to you?”
Clyde flinched, shaking his head vigorously. “N–No… That’s not what I meant…”
Joshua scoffed, amused at his cowardice. “Seems you’re still blind.”
Clyde looked confused, struggling to grasp what Joshua meant.
Avery chuckled. “It’s true. Blindness can be hard to cure, especially in severe cases like his. It takes a long time.”
“That’s quite right.” Joshua nodded in agreement.
Watching Avery happily clinging to Joshua’s arm, Clyde felt a swell of resentment. This shameless woman, cozying up to his uncle right in front of him! If she had treated him half this well back then, would he ever have cheated with Abigail?
Now, she was all smiles and affection, but only because she thought Joshua had more wealth and power. What a short–sighted fool! Didn’t she realize he was the only grandson left in the Smith family?
Joshua–dependent on medicine to live and always on the brink of madness–could hardly be relied on. Who knew if he could be the one in charge of the Smith family in the future?
Imagining Samson handing him the family empire, Clyde couldn’t help but smirk to himself.
Howard, seeing Clyde’s shift in expression, jumped at the opportunity. “Mr. Clyde, we’re all aware of your relationship with Abby. Now that she’s pregnant, it’s only right to give her a proper place by your side for the sake of the child”
Hearing this, Avery’s brows lifted slightly in surprise. So, Abigail’s child had made it through, after all.
Clyde’s smirk instantly faded, replaced by hesitation.
Seeing his reluctance, Abigail choked back her tears and said hoarsely, “Dad, please don’t pressure Clyde. His marriage isn’t something he can decide alone; he needs the approval of both Mr. Smith Senior and Mr. Nathan. It’s beyond him to decide.”
As she spoke, tears trickled down her cheeks again. “Our relationship was never meant to be public, but as long as he cares about me and the baby, I don’t mind whether I have an official title or not.”
