Chapter 6
“Let me go! I’m going to call the cops on you, you freak!” Charlotte’s hair was a mess, and tears streamed down her face from the pain.
Emma sneered and tugged her head back harshly. Then, she slapped her, leaving a clear handprint on her face.
The other people in the room were stunned by Emma’s boldness. By the time they snapped to their senses and surged forward to break up the fight, she’d slapped Charlotte again.
“Did you enjoy leaning on my husband’s shoulder?” she snarled.
Charlotte was dazed from the slaps. She didn’t even know what was going on! Emma had burst into the room, grabbed her hair, and slapped her without any preamble. She was insane!
“Stop it, Emma!” a man roared furiously. He pulled Emma and Charlotte apart, his expression hideous.
Charlotte wept pitifully; the others crowded around her to comfort her.
“Don’t cry, Lottie. We won’t let you suffer like this for no reason. Jon will seek justice for you when he gets back!”
“Hey, go get a towel and some ice. Both her cheeks are swollen…”
Emma looked at Larry Barton, who was glaring at her. She felt as if he was mocking her intelligence. “You told me you were here for a gathering, but it seems you were here to fuck around.”
Before she’d entered the room, Larry had been inside with two friends. Charlotte was the only woman around. Emma could overlook that–the point was that Charlotte had practically been plastered to Larry. Who could stand that?
“Charlotte’s just a friend, Emma!” he snapped.
That was a familiar explanation. Giselle stood at the door, slightly dazed when she heard that. Then, a shadow loomed over her.
Jonathan’s brow furrowed deeply when he saw the chaos in the room. “What’s going on here?”
Charlotte felt even more aggrieved when she heard him. She had a bold and striking appearance; one wouldn’t miss her in a crowd. Her eyes were red after being slapped twice, and she looked pitiful.
“Jonathan…” She sounded like she was on the verge of tears. It was as if she’d suffered a huge grievance. Then, she saw Giselle standing at the door, and her face almost twisted with rage.
She clenched her fists and made herself out to be the weaker party. “I know you resent me, Giselle, but you can’t just get someone to hit me! I don’t know what I’ve done to make you mad–you can talk to me about anything. Don’t make things worse for yourself!”
The first half of her proclamation was what she wanted Jonathan to hear. His expression turned icy as he looked down at Giselle, who stood before him. “Giselle, you-”
“What does this have to do with Ms. Stone? How shameless can you be, you bitch? Weren’t you the one who seduced my husband?” Emma sneered.
Larry hurriedly reached for her. “Stop your nonsense, Emma! We can talk about this at home!”
Jonathan felt a headache coming on. “That’s enough!” he snapped.
Silence descended upon the private room. He continued, “We can deal with whatever is between us, Giselle. Don’t drag Charlotte into this. Apologize to her now, or I’ll pursue this to the very end.”

Chapter 6
He was standing up for Charlotte. Giselle was exasperated. She was here with Emma to catch her cheating husband red–handed. How had this turned into her coming here to cause trouble?
“Do you not have any eyeballs in those eye sockets, Jonathan?” She raised an eyebrow, her tone mocking
He watched her, his eyes glinting ruthlessly. She continued, “Whatever. You can’t see when someone is cuckolding you, anyway.”
His expression turned ugly. He grabbed Giselle’s arm and snarled, “Apologize to Charlotte!”
Emma was stunned by his forceful behavior. “I was the one who slapped this bitch, Mr. Lawson. Why are you making Ms. Stone apologize?”
She wanted to help Giselle, but the latter stopped her with a look. Giselle pulled her arm out of Jonathan’s grasp, her expression like the calm before the storm. “Are you sure you want me to apologize?”
“An apology is the basic thing to do when you’ve made a mistake!”
Charlotte was overwhelmed by sweetness when she saw Jonathan defending her. It didn’t last long, though. Giselle suddenly darted toward her and slapped her swollen right cheek as she watched in astonishment. She screamed in agony.
It had happened so suddenly that no one could stop Giselle. She smiled and said, “Your precious Jonathan is the one who wanted me to apologize. I don’t have any issue with doing that right now. Sorry for this–I went a little harder cause your skin is too thick. My hand hurts, too.”
Charlotte almost had an aneurysm. Aggrieved, she called Jonathan’s name, but someone defended her before Jonathan could.
“I won’t allow you to bully Charlotte, Giselle!” Larry swung a beer bottle at the back of Giselle’s head, his expression menacing.
People shouted, and Giselle hurriedly stepped aside to dodge his attack. Despite that, he still got her on the shoulder. The glass shattered, and she let out a muffled groan.
“Larry!”
The situation spiraled out of control. Charlotte curled up in Jonathan’s arms fearfully. Under normal circumstances, he would’ve comforted her gently. Now, however, he wasn’t in the mood to do anything of the sort.
Emma wanted to break up the fight, but Giselle’s expression was so scary that she didn’t dare move. As she reached for Giselle, the latter grabbed a beer bottle and smashed it on Larry’s head. The ruthlessness in her eyes gave Larry a run for his money.
Someone called the police. Larry, who’d been knocked unconscious, was taken to the hospital. The rest of them were taken to the police station.
Giselle became the main culprit of the fight. She sat there silently, her shirt soaked from the beer. She reeked of alcohol. Her face was emotionless as she answered the police officer’s questions. Soon, she was done giving her
statement.
The police officer said, “The victim is currently unconscious in the hospital. You’ll need to bear full responsibility for whatever compensation is necessary. If he’s unwilling to settle privately, this will be on your record. What’s your family’s phone number? Call them and tell them to come pick you up.”
She lowered her gaze, her voice a little hoarse as she said, I’m an orphan.”

Chapter 6
She’d lost her family since Charlotte’s return. Now, she’d also cast aside the last person she could rely on.
The police officer fell silent. Just then, someone knocked on the door. “I’m done with the interrogations on my end, Captain Lane. Could you help me watch these people for now? The higher–ups want to see me about something urgent.”
Jonathan and the others entered the room. Charlotte had an ice pack on her face. She looked as disheveled as could
- be.
Meanwhile, Emma said, “Don’t worry, Ms. Stone. This started because of me, so I’ll bear full responsibility.”
Giselle said, “You’re not completely to blame.”
She’d acted rashly, too. Not that she regretted it.
The atmosphere turned strange. Charlotte sat beside Jonathan and said, “Mom and Dad are coming to pick me up, Giselle… Why don’t you come home with me later?”
Giselle had just slapped her, yet she could generously offer to take her home. Anyone who saw this would praise her kindness.
However, Giselle glanced at her and held her head high. “Head home with you so you guys can continue gaslighting me?”
Charlotte stiffened. Jonathan’s expression darkened. He told Charlotte, “Ignore her.”
He wanted to see how long Giselle could stick this out! The Grants couldn’t care less about her, and she’d fallen out with him. She barely had any friends, too. If she wanted someone to bail her out, her only option was to give in/ to him.
This conclusion calmed Jonathan’s irritation. Soon, however, he heard a voice ring out. “Mr. Fordham.”
