Chapter 6
“Winne, are you listening? Trust me, if you agree to settle this privately, I’ll definitely negotiate a high compensation for you.”
“It was their company’s bus that hit you, and they have plenty of money.”
Aunagine using that compensation to pay off the rest of our mortgage, how great would that
be,”
“But Winne, to get that compensation, we can’t let anyone know about our relationship. You should stay in the hospital alone for recovery, and it looks like you’re doing pretty well.”
As he spoke excitedly, Kris even patted his thigh in excitement. I couldn’t believe that the man I once revered as my shining light had become so materialistic and selfish.
“I won’t settle this privately, Kris. They hit me because they ran a red light last night, leaving me like this, and you’re only concerned about getting me to settle it privately.”
“That’s impossible. I already called the police last night, and I won’t withdraw the report.”
“Winne, are you crazy? You’re injured and can’t work, isn’t it better to lie here and get a huge compensation? Why be so stubborn about it.”
“Besides, Grace can’t afford any negative news right now. She’s alone at the company, with everyone eyeing her position. She’s struggling so much, why can’t you be more understanding?”
Seeing my resolute attitude, Kris grew angry and embarrassed.
“All you talk about is compensation and how hard Grace has it. Have you ever thought that it’s your wife lying in that hospital bed?”
I was heartbroken and confused. How could someone be so cold and indifferent to their
own wife?

lawyer!”
My questioning startled him, but talking about compensation and his profession brought
back his confidence.
His job had always been his biggest asset in front of me, his source of pride.
I worked hard, did all the housework without complaint, just because I was a food delivery person. My dignity came solely from the fact that my husband was a prominent lawyer.
“Kris, I broke three ribs last night, and our baby… I miscarried. Did you know I was pregnant, just hadn’t found out yet?”
When emotions run high, logic often fades. Kris’s attitude made me want to vent my pain hysterically.
“Winne, can you stop crying and screaming like a shrew?”
From the very beginning of our relationship, Kris was habitually emotionally distant.
Our arguments were always one–sided, with me losing my temper alone, venting and digesting my emotions, and then apologizing to him.
Over time, I didn’t know when I developed this habit of hysteria.
And whenever that happened, Kris would become even colder, always saying, “Do you have
to be like this?”
“I know your broken ribs are painful, but they’re already fixed, you’ll heal in a few months.
And you don’t have to work, so you can rest.”
“Kris, can’t you understand? Because of them, we lost our baby last night! Our baby, s
gone!”
His attitude enraged me. I hoped this news would shake him, make him feel my pain.
“Winne, that’s enough. You know you can’t have children, so don’t use such lies to get what
you want!”
My tears, my emotions, froze at that moment. How could he so casually disbelieve me?
