Chapter 6
In the days that followed, Wesley became even more attentive, constantly trying to please me and make me happy. If I didn’t know his real motive–getting his hands on the demolition compensation–I might have genuinely been moved by his efforts.
One evening after work, I received a call from a friend.
“I’ve found out about the person you asked me to investigate,” he said.
We met up immediately.
“Your so–called best friend is a repeat offender when it comes to being a mistress. She’s had affairs with several wealthy men in the past. After getting caught a few times, she shifted her focus to your husband,” Bowen said, lighting a cigarette. He exhaled slowly, giving me a look filled with disdain, as if mocking my poor judgment.
Bowen and I had grown up together. He had studied abroad in Germany during college, and since I had cut ties with my family over Wesley, Wesley didn’t know about him.
“And the child she’s carrying?” I asked, my voice cold as I looked through photos of Camilla arm–in–arm with various men.
“That’s hard to say. From what I’ve found, eight months ago she was tangled up with a real estate company boss. His daughter found out and had her beaten up, Not long after that, their relationship ended–and shortly after, Camilla became pregnant,” Bowen replied, tossing some hotel check–in photos onto the table with a look of disgust, as if handling something filthy,
“And when did she and Wesley get involved?” I pressed, determined to uncover the full truth.
Bowen glanced up at me, his sharp eyes betraying a trace of pity,
“They’ve been carrying on an inappropriate relationship ever since you introduced them. From the very beginning.”
My hand froze as I held the documents.

I had met Camilla during my first internship. She was just a low–level assistant then,” constantly bullied by coworkers. After helping her a few times, we became friends,
Because she seemed timid and inexperienced, I often took her out to broaden her horizons, Worried about her finances, I frequently gave her gifts–and even introduced my boyfriend
to her.
I never imagined that from the moment she met Wesley, she had already started plotting to
seduce him.
I set the documents down, anger boiling within me.
“Two shameless scumbags,” I muttered.
Bowen chuckled at my reaction.
“I thought you had found some outstanding guy worth giving up your inheritance for. Turns out he’s just trash,” he said mockingly,
I shot him a glare.
“If you have time to mock me, how about using it to find out who Camilla’s baby’s father really is?”
Bowen raised an eyebrow, his expression curious.
“What’s the plan? If the baby isn’t Wesley’s, are you planning to forgive him?”
I tapped my temple and gave him a pointed look.
“Do you think there’s something wrong
with
my
brain?”
Bowen sighed in relief at my response.
“Alright, give me some time,” he said.
I nodded, finished the last sip of my coffee, and left.
That evening was Camilla’s birthday. She had invited both me and Wesley to celebrate. On my way there, I stopped by a roadside stand and picked up a bouquet of white lilies to bring
