Chapter 6
My drowsiness vanished instantly as Sofia’s chaotic, tearful voice filled the line.
“He called me out in the middle of the night, slapped me hard, showed me our chat history,
and forced me to delete all the photos!”
he’s with me, why won’t he divorce you? I’m younger, prettier, and come from a better family! Why should I stay as the mistress hiding in the shadows?”
“You got pregnant, and he couldn’t wait to post it on Instagram. Meanwhile, I had to beg my dad to help him land a huge project, and he didn’t even mention me! I’m so jealous of you! 1 can’t stand seeing you two happy together!”
Sofia ranted madly, but I felt nothing.
Perhaps Ruben still loved me, but his love wasn’t strong enough to resist temptation.
He couldn’t bear to let go of me, the woman who had been by his side through thick and thin, yet he also couldn’t reject the allure of women who threw themselves at him.
Too greedy.
Şofia showed no signs of stopping, and her screeching made my ears ache. Without hesitation, I hung up and blocked her number.
Finally, peace.
The next morning, when I opened my door, I was startled to find Ruben waiting outside.
He was holding a bag of steaming breakfast, his suit wrinkled and his face weary.
When he saw me, his eyes lit up.
“Sabrina, you left last night, and I was worried about you being alone. I tracked your location and came here. I brought you breakfast–you’ll get a stomachache if you don’t eat.
He carefully handed the food to me, his tenderness reminding me of the high school boy who had been just as attentive.

I waved him off, refusing the gesture.
“Stop doing pointless things. I’m giving you one day to think about it. If you don’t sign the papers, I’ll file a lawsuit. I have plenty of evidence.”
His face turned ashen, the blood draining even from his lips.
“Sabrina, you’re so heartless,” he said, lowering his head with a bitter smile.

What can I do to make you forgive me?”
I shook my head, saying nothing more as I brushed past him.
After leaving, I headed to my new workplace to complete my onboarding.
Back when Ruben was starting his business and needed funding, I had taken on extra jobs at night–delivering food and driving taxis–after finishing my full–time job during the day.
It was exhausting, but I never complained.
While Ruben worked on proposals and sourced supplies, I threw myself into supporting him, despite how busy and overwhelmed he was.
Seeing me worn out back then, he had teared up, swearing to give me a good life someday.
Eventually, things did improve, and I quit my job to enjoy a more comfortable life.
But Ruben changed.
Getting back into work was a little unfamiliar, but not difficult.
My new colleagues were kind and welcoming.
By lunchtime, I noticed my personal accounts had been flooded with messages.
“Sabrina, don’t argue with Ruben anymore. There’s nothing a couple can’t work through.”
“Sabrina, you’ve been in love for years. Just talk things out instead of giving him the cold shoulder.”

Chapter 6
“Sabrina, Ruben called and begged me to tell you he hopes you’ll forgive him.”
Friends close to me explained what had happened.
Unable to contact me, Ruben had reached out to every mutual friend and classmate from high school and college, asking them to plead his case.
I couldn’t believe it. Ruben had completely lost his mind.
Pposted on Instagram to clarify, asking everyone to stop messaging me. I assured them I would handle my personal matters and apologized for the trouble.
Then, I called Ruben. He answered instantly, his voice brimming with joy.
“Sabrina, you’re finally calling me!”
I pinched the bridge of my nose, feeling utterly drained.
“Stop it, Ruben. Playing the role of the devoted lover–is it fun? Don’t involve others in our
issues.”
There was a long silence on the other end.
Annoyed, I hung up.
