The subtle change in Conrad went unnoticed by Wilhelmina since she was trying to urge him to marry her. She then gave her mother a look.
Sheila said, “You guys are of marrying age now. I think you should prepare for the wedding. The second of October seems like a good date. I think you should hold your wedding on that day.”
The man looked away and picked up his glass to have a sip, but the wine tasted a bit more sour than usual. “Aunt Sheila, you know the family rules. My father has passed away, and I need to keep vigil for three years. No weddings or happy occasions during that period.”
Of course, Sheila knew. That rule could only be broken if the lady were pregnant. That was why she told Wilhelmina to go through with artificial insemination, but that plan failed.
Wilhelmina wanted to scream, and her lips turned downward. Three years? I can’t even wait for three months! “You’re the family head now. Why don’t you just change the rules?”
Conrad shot her with a solemn look. “My ancestors established the rules. If we can change them however we want, then the rules would mean nothing. I will not make the same mistake my father did.”
Noticing her daughter’s misstep, Sheila quickly stepped in. “She was just joking, so don’t mind her. You’re not officially married yet, but you’re engaged. You’re still a couple, so why don’t you let her move into your house?”
Conrad swirled his glass, his eyes glinting coldly. “Sorry, Aunt Sheila, but before I am fully healed, I cannot sleep with anyone.”
Sheila choked on her saliva, and her face fell. Conrad then refilled her glass, saying, “But don’t worry. Wilhelmina’s my only fiancée. I won’t find another girl.”
The woman felt better after hearing that. Well, indeed, he didn’t see any other woman after getting engaged with Wilhelmina.
Angela, who was in the other room, couldn’t hear a word. They’d been speaking quietly, but Conrad raised his voice when saying the last sentence. It was as if he had wanted her to hear it. Ah, so they’re urging him to marry Wilhelmina. She couldn’t care less about their marriage; all she cared about was her child’s welfare.
Christopher refilled her glass. “Remember the bunny we saved during our travels?”
Angela nodded. “Yeah. Its hind leg was broken, and the vet said it couldn’t survive in the wilds anymore.”
“I adopted it and hooked it up with an artificial leg. Wanna see it when we have time?”

“Sure.” She smiled, and then she felt a cold aura slithering through the holes in the divider. She shivered and rubbed her arms.
Christopher took his coat off and draped it over her. The coat’s warmth dispelled the cold that was assailing her. “Thanks.”
“No problem.” He put on a beautiful smile. “It’s good to see you again, Angie. I’ve been searching for you since I came back.”.
She paused for a moment. “You’ve been searching for me?” But I thought you cut off contact.
The man stared down and heaved a sigh. “After the trip was over, my dad’s condition worsened, so I went abroad with him for his treatment. I tried to call you after I came back, but I couldn’t get through.”
Angela felt her heart flutter a bit. So, he didn’t cut off contact. He couldn’t stay in touch because he was overseas? “I came to Drumston to get a job and changed my number.”
“I
I see. Christopher’s eyes flickered, but maybe that was just the light. “Guess fate played a trick on us, but good thing we met again. Guess we’re meant to be reunited.”
Something within her stirred, and her heart was beating furiously. Back when they met, Christopher was the man of her dreams. Handsome, dashing, gentle, and talented. How nice it’d be if he weren’t from the Heathcliff Family. How nice it’d be if that medical event never happened.
“While she was silent, Christopher asked, “Do you know about the Muse Club?”
Angela had heard of it back in college. It was formed by a group of young, successful artists, and a lot of people wanted to join it. “You’re a member?”
He nodded. “There’s going to be a party tomorrow. Do you want to come with me? That way, you can build some connections. It’d be good for your future.”
The lady pursed her lips. Her life mostly consisted of work, and she seldom joined her department’s events, but she wanted to explore more about the world. “Sure.”
When Conrad heard everything from the space beside, he clenched his cutlery tighter, and his eyes flared with malice.
Wilhelmina looked at him, and a sinister smirk curled her lips. “Told you he’s her old flame, Conrad. You shouldn’t trust anyone but me. They only wish to take from you.”
