Chapter 22 A Perfect Act

After work, Angela darted out of the office and got ready to get her lunch at the cafeteria. She got hungry a lot lately, possibly because of her pregnancy, However, the moment she came to the reception, she ran into someone she never wanted to see again–Wilhelmina.
Wilhelmina was here to see Conrad, but his secretary denied her entry, and she needed someone to vent her fury on. Angela, naturally, became the unlucky victim. She couldn’t believe Conrad would promote instead of terminating her.
Angela didn’t want anything to do with her, so she tried to scurry away, but Wilhelmina darted over to her and blocked her path. “You, come with me.”
The receptionist looked at them with interest, while Angela felt a little miffed. She just managed to crush the rumors a while ago, so she didn’t want to risk anything that could start another rumor.
They came to the hanging garden, and Wilhelmina sneered. “Know your place, worm. Conrad is out of your league.”
Angela tried her best to stay calm and put on a smile. Slowly, she said, “He’s also very much out of your league as well.”
Wilhelmina choked and shot her a glare. “Just here to remind you that you’re lucky you aborted the kid, or you would be sent abroad and get yourself killed.”
Angela shivered. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Wilhelmina sneered eerily. “Do you know what his family does to their heirs‘ lovers who get themselves pregnant? They would be sent abroad while the Heathcliffs would take their children. The women would be left alone for eighteen years, only allowed to come back when their children are of age. Most die before they could live to see that day, however.”
Angela had no idea if she was telling the truth or not, but this story did sound scary. Conrad didn’t tell her what he would do next. She wondered if he was keeping a secret because she might resist if she found out. She took a deep breath and calmed herself down to keep Wilhelmina from noticing her nervousness. “Miss Prescott, I’ve already lost my child, and now I just want my normal life back. Can you let bygones be bygones? I’m sure Mr. Heathcliff doesn’t want to talk about this either.”
Wilhelmina looked at Angela’s belly darkly. “If you lie to me and keep the child, I’ll make sure the Heathcliffs send you away. You’ll die uselessly.” She turned on her heel and left.
Angela felt her chest tighten and she lost her appetite. She went to the cafeteria and got herself the cheapest meal. While she was digging in, an eerie silence suddenly descended upon the cafeteria as everyone stopped talking.
She looked up only to be met with the dastardly dashing man, and she quickly went back to

her meal, pretending that she saw nothing. I’m in the corner. He shouldn’t be able to see me.
Kevin announced, “Mr. Heathcliff is only here for lunch. Carry on, don’t mind us.”

The crowd started chatting again. Angela made a face, surprised that Conrad would come to the cafeteria. The next moment, she felt the light dimming out like something was looming over her.
Conrad sat down. This was his first time in the cafeteria. He wanted to survey things, but mostly he wanted to keep an eye on Angela. Angela almost spewed her soup out. A hundred spots, and you pick this one? You’re going to start another rumor.
She stood up. “Hello, sir. Thank you for saving me back at the celebration. I won’t forget what you have done for me, and I will work hard for the company.” I have to put on a perfect act.
A smirk curled Conrad’s lips. She should consider starting an acting career. “Have you recovered fully?”
“Yes, sir.” She grinned. He’s working with me. I bet no one can see through this act.
Conrad then looked at her food. She took thirty grand away, and now she’s only having the cheapest lunch? Could she really be a scrooge? “Is the staff meal good?”
“It is.” Angela nodded quickly. “Thanks to you, it’s only a dollar and a half, and it has everything. Sandwich, milk, and salad. And that’s not even the only option.”
A mocking light glinted in Conrad’s eyes. She’s either not a picky eater, or she’s just stingy with her money. I think it’s the latter.
Kevin got Conrad a steak. There were foreigners as well as locals who came back from their study abroad in this company, so they had all types of cuisine. Conrad cut up the steak and popped it into his mouth. He asked, “Do you have a passport?”
What? Angela froze. She felt her mind getting blown and her world spinning. He’s already asking me that? Is he really going to send me abroad and leave me there to rot alone?
