Chapter 19 A Slight Stirring of the Heart
Conrad stared at the photo. The woman in the photo was smiling sweetly!
A ball of flames ignited in his chest but his expression remained as cold and stoic as ever.

“Angela Banner is just an employee of MG Group. She has nothing to do with me. I’m not interested in her private life. You can leave now.”
Wilhelmina didn’t believe him. Why would Conrad have gotten so anxious and carried Angela out of the ballroom if nothing was going on between them?
“You have to believe me, Conrad. Angela’s a spy that Christopher planted by your side. We grew up together. We’re childhood friends. I’m the one who loves you the most in this entire world. I would even sacrifice my life for you.”
“Get out,” Conrad uttered icily as he refused to entertain her any longer.
Wilhelmina was sorely disappointed because this was not the reaction she wanted.
Once the meal was over, Christopher gave Angela a ride home and Conrad just so happened to see Christopher walking Angela to the entrance of her apartment building.
Conrad’s eyes blazed with fury.
Once Christopher drove off, Conrad kicked his car door open and marched over.
Angela was waiting for the elevator when Conrad flung her over his shoulder and threw her into the car. She didn’t even have time to react.
Her first thought was that she was being kidnapped. She was just about to scream for help, but the words died in her throat once she saw his handsome face and glowering eyes.
“W–What are you doing, Mr. Heathcliff?”
Conrad didn’t answer her. Instead, he snarled to the driver, “Drive.”
The driver immediately did as told.
Angela shrank against the car door and glanced at Conrad fearfully. He had a stormy expression on his face. She could see the dark clouds hovering above his head.
“Where are we going?”
He didn’t speak.
“Did I do something wrong?”
Again, he remained silent.
The atmosphere inside the car was chilling to the bone Angela was so tense that she could barely breathe. Her heart was also pounding.

The car drove to the outskirts of the city and Angela was brought to a dimly lit room.
“Hook her up to the lie detector,” Conrad ordered.
Angela’s heart leaped into her throat. Lie detector? What’s going on?
A woman in black hooked her up to a lie detector.
The atmosphere turned grave. Angela could scarcely breathe.
“How many boyfriends have you had, Miss Banner?”
“I never had a boyfriend. I’m still… a virgin.”

As Angela responded, she glanced at the man who was sitting nearby. Although he always gave off a sense of coldness, there was an added layer of hostility to him today. She felt as if he would tear her head off any second now.
“Does the child you’re carrying belong to Mr. Conrad?
Angela felt as if she were a suspect who was being interrogated. “If the sperm was his, then the child is definitely his too.”
“What’s your relationship with Christopher Heathcliff?”
Angela stiffened slightly. How did he find out about that? Has he been spying on me?
“There’s not much of a relationship. I met him three years ago when I was on vacation but we didn’t keep in touch. I ran into him again by coincidence last week when he was having his photography exhibition. I didn’t know he was Mr. Heathcliff’s older brother. I only found out when Kelly told me during the celebration banquet.”
“Have the two of you ever been involved romantically?”
“Of course not!”
Angela vehemently shook her head. Chris was a kind gentleman and her heart did stir ever so slightly, but since he wasn’t interested in her, she wasn’t going to nurse a one–sided crush either. She wasn’t a masochist.
The woman in black asked a few more questions. At last, she paused for a moment before asking, “This is the final question. Have you ever lied to Mr. Conrad?”
Angela pursed her lips and gulped. “No. I have not.”
The woman in black printed out a report and passed it to Conrad.
“Miss Banner didn’t pass the lie detector test, Mr. Conrad!”
Conrad’s fists clenched and the report immediately crumpled.
He stood up and walked over to Angela. His looming shadow swallowed her whole.
“Do you know what the consequences of lying to me are?” He reached out and clutched her by the chin.

Angela had shrunk back against her chair. She was trembling in fear. His piercing eyes and hostile expression made it seem as if he would break her neck any second now.
“I’m giving you one last chance to tell the truth. Tell me. What’s your relationship with Christopher?”
