Nicole took a deep breath and pushed the office door open on her own.
William was looking down at a file before he looked up. His expression changed the moment he saw who it was.
The student instantly recognized her, too. She had just been looking at Nicole’s academic record, and there was a photo attached to it. “Nicole!”
William’s expression darkened, emotions stirring behind his eyes. “Why are you here?”
Nicole answered in a quiet voice, “Dr. Hayes, I want to continue my studies, so I applied to your program.”
As expected, William’s expression shifted again when he heard that. His eyes turned cold, but he didn’t respond right away.
His tone remained sharp when he spoke. “Continue your studies? My program now has much higher standards than three years ago. Even the current students who study here full–time struggle to pass. You’ve been out of school for three years. Are you that confident?”
Deep down, he knew the truth, Nicole’s talent and ability surpassed most of the students at the university. She used to be his most outstanding student. She had her own strengths when it came to clinical surgery.
How could he not feel pleased when he saw that she came back?
Still, he wanted to keep up his pride a little longer.
Back then, no matter how hard he tried to persuade her, she still walked away. He couldn’t just act like nothing happened and welcome her with open arms now. Nicole’s nerves were tight, but once she had made her decision, she wouldn’t back down, “Dr. Hayes, I’ve already started reviewing. I can take the exam with the other students. As long as I pass your review, let me continue my studies.”
William, sering that she was serious, decided to throw her a challenge. He handed her a freshly printed test.
The studeist next to him caught a glimpse and gasped. “Dr. Hayes, isn’t that the test you haven’t even taken yourself yet? It doesn’t even have an answer key, and you’re giving it to Micole?”
“In surgery, how many emergencies came with an answer key? Nicole, if you can score 95, I’ll consider letting you into my program. But that’s only the first step!” The student, bearing that, instantly felt like a weight had dropped–everything went black for a second
Nicole had to score a 95 for a test without an answer key and that was only the first step? No one ever said William’s program was this brutal!
The student clutched her book tightly, suddenly feeling overwhelmed with feat.
But Nicole didn’t hesitate. Herd
dark eyes were calm, her emotions held tightly in check, showing no sign of panic. “Got it, Dr. Hayes ” You can use the lab next door. From now until tomorrow, you’ve got half a day lett. Can you tum in the test by then?”
The time was tight, but Nicole had always been the land to race against the clock. She nodded. “Alright.”
She took the test, tumed around, and left the office, heading toward the lab.
She had been to the labs many times during her undergrad years. Even though had been away for three years, stepping inside still gave her a sense of familiarity. She pushed the lab door open with practiced ease and sat down to start studying for the test.
Meanwhile, over on the other side, Monica woke up and went downstairs for breakfast, only to find that there was nothing left on the dining table
She paused. It was only 9:00am, wasn’t it?
She always woke up late, and her mom used to wait for her to have breakfast together. But now, Monica came downstairs to find no one around. She took a deep breath, a starp glint flashing in her eyes, and immediately called for the household statt to question then.
