Nicole’s heart slapped a beat. She quickly replied, “No, it’s not that I was just feeling a bit tired, so I decided to lie down and rest for a while.”
Heidi sighed softly, choosing not to press for more details. She got straight to the point. “Nicole, is there some kind of misunderstanding between you and Monica?
Nicole immediately understood what Heidi was trying to convey. After all, Monica had been her source of comfort for over 20 years.
Heidi never had another child after her biological daughter had been lost. If Monica hadn’t been there all these years, supporting her, Nicole knew that Heidi’s beart might have given out long ago.
Knowing how irreplaceable Monica was to Heidi, Nicole didn’t want to say anything bad to her. So she shook her head gently and asked, “Mom, why would you ask. me that?”

Nicole lowered her gaze downward, her emotions swirling beneath the surface at Heidi’s words. Finally, she responded, “Okay, Mom. I understand.”
“Good girl,” Heidi murmured, gently patting Nicole’s head before tuming to leave.
On her way downstairs, Heidi passed Monica’s room and heard something crash to the floor. Monica’s voice fo
followed–sharp and full of frustration. “Nicole, this is all your fault. You’ve taken all of Mom’s love from me!”

When Monica opened the door, her face was flushed, but there was nothing else unusual about her appearance.
Heidi glanced over Monica’s shoulder into the rooms, scanning the floor for any broken pieces. When she didn’t see any, she looked back at Monica with a steady. unreadable gaze.
