Chapter 5
Mrs. Miller knew I was coming, so she canceled an international meeting just to see me. The moment she saw me, her eyes reddened.
“You’ve lost weight again…”
“I heard about your engagement with the Anderson family. You’re a good child, and I truly hate to see you go.”
I handed her the bank card my mother had given me.
“I’ll come visit. Thank you for all the care you’ve given me over the years.”
Tears fell from Mrs. Miller’s eyes.
“You’re making this feel distant.”
“It’s my fault–I was too busy with work to look after you properly.”
“I even had the foolish hope of making you my daughter–in–law. But never mind… they’re unworthy of you.”
“Consider this my contribution to your dowry. I may not be able to attend your wedding, but I truly hope you’ll be happy.”
Holding back my own tears, I hugged her tightly. For all these years at the Miller family, Mrs. Miller had treated me as her own daughter. But when it comes to matters of the heart, who can control such things? She held my hand, giving countless reminders with
reluctance.
Halfway through, Jensen and the others returned. The two brothers‘ faces darkened when
they saw me.
“What marriage? Annalise, what nonsense have you been telling my mother?” Jensen demanded.
“Jensen! How can you talk to your sister like that?” Mrs. Miller snapped.
Benjamin quickly moved to her side.
