Chapter 71
Abigail’s expression was full of resentment, and her breathing was heavy as she glared at me with fury. She said through gritted teeth, “No way, Samuel. I’m not letting you go. You’re my husband. Don’t even think of running away from me!”
Her words made me laugh coldly. I looked at her calmly, then asked pointedly, “Abigail, did you forget about the line of people waiting for your attention? Especially Joshua? You keep telling him to clear up those rumors, but you’re still secretly seeing him, aren’t you?”
“I…” She hesitated, trying to find the words to say. “It’s not what you think.”
I shook my head, laughing bitterly. “Not what I think? Then tell me, Abigail, what am I thinking?”
She went silent, unable to answer.
I laughed mockingly, shaking my head. “Nothing but empty words, huh? You put on this act, and these lies—you might be fine with them, but I’m exhausted. Don’t you feel tired of pretending?”
For once, she didn’t respond to my accusations. She just looked at me intently, then declared,‘ I won’t let you go. Don’t even think about it. If Joshua bothers you so much, then I’ll tell him to stay away from you.”
I laughed derisively. Seriously? She would say anything to keep me around, no matter how
twisted.
“Come on, we’re going home,” she said firmly, grabbing my arm and leaving me no choice
but to follow.
I shook her hand off with disgust. “Go where exactly? To your place with Joshua? You might be fine with that, but I’m sickened.”
My words cut deep. Her face showed pain, but she didn’t let go. Just then, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen, her expression tightening.
I caught a glimpse of the caller ID: Joshua.
Of course. She couldn’t resist answering her lover’s call. She finally let go of my arm, answering the call with an irritated tone. “Can this not wait? I told you, I’m dealing with something important.”
She said after a pause, “Fine, I’ll be right there.” She turned back to me after hanging up, trying to explain. “I have something I need to take care of…”
I raised my hand, cutting her off coldly. “No need to explain. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.”
Chapter 71
Without another glance, I turned and walked away.
Ever since Abigail pulled her funding, any feelings I had left for her disappeared. If she could be that heartless and indifferent to the lives affected, why should I feel any attachment?
My sister’s death was tied to her actions. Seeing her now only filled me with disgust.
Back at my apartment, I took a long shower, hoping to wash off the negativity. I was lying down, finally relaxing, when I heard a knock on my door.
“Samuel, it’s me, Abigail. Open up. I need to talk to you.”
Her voice was softer this time, less confrontational. I ignored her, staying silent, pretending I wasn’t home. I had no desire to see her face or hear whatever excuse she had prepared this
time.
