I pushed myself relentlessly for days to create a piece that would satisfy Miles and not let my first client down. After three intense days, I finally had created something I was proud of.
I yawned as I headed to the bathroom and prepared to wash up before winding down.
I was taken aback by my appearance when I looked at my reflection in the mirror. I was gaunt and worn out with dark circles under my eyes like twin bruises. My entire face was a hollow mask.
I heard a frantic knock at the door after I washed up and walked out of the bathroom. Each bang was louder than the last. There was even the sound of someone kicking the door.
‘Samuel, open the door!” I finally realized amid the loud shouting that the person banging on the door was Abigail.
It was already 11:00 pm now. I was worried that the neighbors would be livid with me because of her aggressive pounding on the door.
Therefore, I stumbled to the door and opened it only to find Abigail staring at me with fury.
“How many times have I called you? Why didn’t you pick up?” She shouted at me exasperatedly, “I thought you’d died in here!”
* Her shrill voice made my eardrums throb.
I quickly pulled her into the house and helplessly said, “Come in if you have something to say. Can we please not disturb the neighbors?”
I closed the door and found her shocked as she looked at the scattered draft papers everywhere. She glanced back at me in disbelief. “You haven’t checked your phone at all? Have you been here working the whole time?”
I nodded. “I need to focus when I’m working, so I didn’t check my phone.”
I looked at her faintly and asked rhetorically, “Was there something urgent?”
“No, I just wanted to see if you’re still alive.” She looked at me coldly. Her attitude remained proud and unyielding.
I shrugged with a slight smile and said casually, “Well, as you can see, I’m very much alive. You must be disappointed, aren’t you?”
“You…” Abigail bit her lips lightly and said coldly, “How do you even manage to live here? It’s like a dog’s kennel. No. Even a dog’s kennel would feel cozier!”
I was completely unfazed by her sarcasm and mockery.
Instead, I spread my hands and replied with a faint smile, “There’s no place more comfortable

Her face stiffened. It was as if she was dissatisfied with my response.
She nodded coldly and sneered. “Fine. Have it your way, then.”
With that, she pushed the door and was about to leave. However, when she opened the door, she saw Sophia standing at my doorstep, preparing to knock on the door.
“Sophia? What are you doing here?” Abigail was slightly stunned at the sight of Sophia as she frowned and asked her coldly.
A hint of coldness crossed the corner of Sophia’s lips as she looked at her mockingly and fearlessly. “Where I am has nothing to do with you, does it? I’ve already resigned after all, haven’t I?”
Abigail’s face darkened. She wanted to retort but was unable to find the right words.
She finally spoke with a cold expression after a moment of hesitation. “This is my husband’s place. Don’t you think it’s inappropriate for a strange woman like you to be here?”
Sophia laughed in disbelief at Abigail’s words and retorted coldly, “But Mr. Gebb doesn’t seem to feel that way, does he?”
Abigail glanced at me coldly as if asking my stance on this unexpected encounter.
I looked at Sophia calmly before I gestured for her to enter and said with a smile, “Come on in.
