Chapter 29: Smells Delicious
It had been two weeks since the rainy night when Chloe and Wyatt last saw each other. During that time, Wyatt had been holed up in the lab, and his disheveled appearance made it clear that he hadn’t changed clothes in quite some time.
Chloe suddenly recalled the conversation she overheard between Wyatt and the middle–aged man. It seemed like they were having trouble in the lab; otherwise, Wyatt wouldn’t look so worn out.
However, Chloe didn’t ask about it. Instead, she handed him the breakfast she had prepared before hurrying off to see her professor.
“I made you breakfast. After an all–nighter, you must feel awful. Eating son much better,” Chloe said with a smile.

In the past, Wyatt had never thought much about staying up all night, but hearing Chloe’s suggestion made it sound like a good idea. His meals had been irregular lately, and knowing Chloe’s cooking skills, he suddenly felt an urge to try the breakfast she had brought.
“Thank you,” he said without hesitation, accepting the food. Chloe smiled, feeling grateful to Wyatt too. After all, if it weren’t for him lending her that umbrella the other night, she might have caught a cold.
Seeing Chloe with a bag in hand, Wyatt guessed that she had plans. “Heading out?”
“Yeah, the professor asked me to stop by his house. I think he needs help with something, so I should get. going,” Chloe replied before quickly saying goodbye and heading off.
As soon as Chloe left, Wyatt opened the insulated container, and the aroma from the breakfast filled the air. Although he hadn’t had much of an appetite after pulling an all–nighter, the smell was so enticing that he suddenly felt like eating.
It was a workday morning, and the rush hour crowd packed the subway. Chloe was jostled by the throngs, of people, squeezed in and then out of the train. She couldn’t help but sigh in exasperation.
When she arrived at Professor Lauren’s house, everything went smoothly. She had been there before, and with the professor’s prior notice, there was no hassle this time.
When the door opened, it wasn’t the professor who greeted her but someone else. Chloe recognized him. She had seen him talking to others outside the hospital once, but she didn’t know his name. Now, seeing him at the professor’s home, she figured he must be one of his students.
“Is that Chloe?” Professor Lauren’s voice called from inside. Chloe and the man at the door exchanged polite nods before heading inside together.
Chloe placed the bag she was carrying on the table. The professor glanced at it and sighed. It was a box of expensive pastries from a well–known shop, notoriously difficult to get. The fact that Chloe had brought it meant she had stood in line early in the morning to get it.
This girl–she always brought something whenever she visited.
“Come over here and take a look. I’ve been going through my materials, but I’m not sure if I found the right one. Old age, you know–I can’t remember everything,” Professor Lauren said with a chuckle.
Chloe put the pastries aside and walked over to the professor’s side. Looking at the stack of books and papers, she quickly realized that the professor was searching for something specific.
“I remember one of the

- it. Help me find it, will you?” the professor asked.
Chloe’s memory was usually reliable, especially when it came to important details. She vaguely remembered seeing the book in question at the library hot long ago. She scanned the professor’s bookshelf and, sure enough, found the book.
“Is this the one you’re looking for?” Chloe asked, holding up the book.
2/2
Professor Lauren adjusted his glasses and nodded with satisfaction. “Yes, that’s the one. I would’ve been looking for it all day if you hadn’t found it.”
Turning to the other person in the room, the professor handed him the book and some documents. Matthew, take these. They should help you with your research. I’ll let you know if I find anything else useful.”
”
Matthew thanked the professor. He was in the middle of preparing his dissertation but had trouble finding all the necessary sources. Hearing that Professor Lauren had a wealth of original material, he had come to seek help, and the professor had been generous in offering his resources.
As Matthew gathered the materials, the professor finally introduced the two. “Oh, I haven’t introduced you properly. Chloe, this is Matthew, one of my students. He’s working on his PhD. And Matthew, this is Chloe -soon to be my student again, as she’s preparing to take my graduate program entrance exam.”
Matthew had only caught a brief glimpse of Chloe at the hospital last time and hadn’t thought much of it. Now, learning that she was about to become one of Professor Lauren’s students, he was impressed.
The professor smiled warmly, then added, “You two should study together at the library. Matthew has a lot of experience with grad school exams, so he could be a big help to you, Chloe.”
Chloe turned to Matthew and greeted him formally, “Hello, Senior Matthew, I’m Chloe.”
Matthew smiled back. He had a good impression of her, and the two exchanged contact information.
“Let’s meet up at the library sometime. We can discuss any study issues and help each other out,” Matthew suggested.
Studying together would certainly be more efficient, and having someone to collaborate with was always
a bonus.
After a few more words, Matthew excused himself, saying he had to head to another class. With him gone, the house was much quieter.
The professor glanced at the pastries Chloe had brought and sighed again. She knew Chloe must’ve stood in line to get them, but if she mentioned it, Chloe would surely brush it off as nothing.
“You didn’t have to bring these treats every time,” Professor Lauren said with a smile. Chloe grinned, knowing the professor was just being kind. Still, how could she visit empty–handed?
