Chapter 20: Giving a Chance
The evening breeze was gentle as Chloe waited by the roadside while the assistant went to fetch the car. Suddenly, she heard someone calling her name. Turning around, she recognized a familiar face–it was Joshua.
Joshua had noticed Chloe earlier, and he had purposely stepped out from his work inside to come and meet her.
“It’s been a while since we last saw each other,” Joshua began. “I think the last time was at graduation. I had planned to give you flowers that day, but Julian stopped me. I never got to see you before you left, and I didn’t give you the flowers I had specially prepared. Looking back shame.”
As Joshua brought up the past, Chloe didn’t feel touched. Instead, she leit a deep sense of awkwardness.
During their university days, both Joshua and Julian had pursued her, two young men from wealthy families vying for her attention. They competed fiercely, and it was a period Chloe would rather not revisit. She didn’t want to spend any more time reminiscing, especially not with Joshua, whom she had no particular desire to reconnect with.
“That’s all in the past,” Chloe said, glancing at the time. She wondered why the assistant was taking so long to return and was about to go find him when Joshua stepped in front of her, blocking her way.
“Don’t go just yet, please. You know, I’ve wanted to see you for all these years. I can’t forget that confident, radiant version of you I knew in college. But after you got together with Julian, he locked you away like some possession. It was so unfair to you. It was impossible for anyone to meet you after that.”
Joshua’s words visibly unsettled Chloe. Her face tensed as he continued.
“What exactly are you trying to say?” she asked.
Joshua smiled. “Back in college, both Julian and I were chasing you, but you chose him–not because ! didn’t care enough about you, but because he was persistent. Have you ever considered that he only stuck around because he wanted to win? Men understand other men. I can tell you, Julian treated it like a competition, not a relationship.”
Chloe could feel a sharp pain in her chest, as if a deep wound had been ripped open. His words were cutting, and though they were difficult to hear, Joshua knew he had to say them. He couldn’t let this chance pass by.
“Just give me a chance, Chloe,” Joshua pleaded. “I know you’ve broken up with him, and there’s no going back. So why not give me a shot? My feelings for you haven’t changed, and I’ll respect you far more than he ever did.”
Joshua was almost desperate, eager to prove himself. His heart had never stopped beating for her, and standing before her now, it raced like never before.
But–Chloe’s response was firm and unwavering. “No, I just ended things with him. I don’t need another complication in my life. Let’s not bring up the past anymore. From now on, let’s do our
separate ways.”
With that, Chloe turned and walked away, not giving Joshua any room to continue. She had no intention of
getting involved with Julian again, nor did she want anything to do with Joshua.
Watching Chloe leave, Joshua wasn’t angry. Instead, he saw it as a challenge. Sometimes, things don’t end just because one person wants them to.
Nearby, Daniel was staring at William’s phone in disbelief. “You’re ruthless! They’re standing miles apart, just talking, but your photo makes it look like they’re practically kissing.”
Chapter 201 Geving a Chance
William shrugged. He knew all about Joshua and Julian’s college rivalry over Chloe. It had been intense back then, and now it seemed like it was far from over
If Julian sees this photo, who knows what will happen?” William said with a smirk.
“You’re really stirring the pot, aren’t you?” Daniel asked
William chuckled and sent the photos to Julian. “Aren’t you curious to see what happens next?” he asked.
Daniel shook his head. He had to admit, William was devious. But he also wondered what might happen now. “Chloe seems serious about ending things with Julian. Do you think he’ll…”
William cut him off. “Regret? No chance. Those two will never really break up. Chloe will never leave Julian. It’s obvious, isn’t it?”
“Then why did you send the photos?”
“For fun, of course. Admit it, you’re curious too. Let’s see how this all plays out.”
Daniel couldn’t help but glance at the photos again. They really did look like a romantic couple in the picture. He just hoped things wouldn’t spiral out of control.
Meanwhile, Chloe’s assistant soon returned and drove her back to her building. He was in a rush to head back to pick up Mia later that night, so Chloe decided to stop by the supermarket before going home.
After picking up some groceries, Chloe was carrying her bags toward her building when she ran into Wyatt. As always, Wyatt’s intense focus gave him a certain air of seriousness, even when simply walking
home.
The two greeted each other politely as they crossed paths.
“I bought a lot of groceries today,” Chloe said with a smile. “Since we ran into each other, why don’t you come over for dinner?”
Wyatt initially wanted to decline, but he remembered how good Chloe’s cooking had been the few times he had tried it before. Before he knew it, he was nodding in agreement. Sometimes, good food can sway even the most disciplined minds.
It was Wyatt’s first time visiting Chloe’s apartment. He looked around and was struck by how relaxed he felt in the space. The walls were painted in warm tones, and there were several potted plants on the windowsill, bringing life into the room. The table was covered with study materials and books, giving the home a perfect balance between coziness and dedication to learning.
