Chapter 10: Easy to Please
Chloe quickly raised the sandwich in her hand, smiling. “This is my dinner for tonight. If you haven’t eaten yet and don’t mind, would you like some?”
Wyatt had been so absorbed in his work that he hadn’t noticed the time. If Chloe hadn’t mentioned dinner, he wouldn’t have realized it was already dark. Glancing at the clock, he was surprised to find it was almost 7 p.m., and he hadn’t eaten or even had a drink of water.
Now that dinner was brought up, his stomach reminded him that he was indeed hungry.
“I’d appreciate that,” he said, accepting her offer. He took the sandwich from Chloe and, without hesitation, bit into it. It was clear he was starving.
Chloe watched Wyatt expectantly. After all, when son received. She was eager to hear Wyatt’s opinion.
Books, they always hope the food will be well
“So, how is it? Do you like it? Is it something you’d normally enjoy?”
At first, Wyatt hadn’t expected much from a sandwich. After all, he’d eaten plenty of sandwiches just to fill his stomach, without much thought to the taste.
But this one was different. The combination of bacon and vegetables made it surprisingly delicious. He wasn’t sure if it was because he hadn’t eaten all day or if Chloe’s cooking was just that good, but the sandwich left him wanting more.
“I’ve got another sandwich at home, with a different flavor. Would you like to try it?” Chloe asked, noticing how eagerly Wyatt devoured the first one,
Wyatt swallowed his bite and smiled. “I’d love that, thank you.”
Chloe returned shortly, handing him another sandwich along with a yogurt.
Wyatt had already finished the first sandwich and gratefully accepted the second, eating it just as enthusiastically. He had to admit, Chloe’s cooking was exceptional. He hadn’t thought of eating as an enjoyable experience before, but tonight it felt like a small delight.
Later that evening, after wrapping up his work, Wyatt decided to go for a night run. Keeping fit was important to him, especially since his work in the lab required focus and stamina. He had kept up his exercise routine for years.
On his way back, he ran into Chloe, who was also returning with a small bag in her hand, having taken a walk to pick up a few things.
“Out for a walk?” Wyatt asked.
“Just grabbing some things,” Chloe said, lifting the bag in her hand.
Since they lived in the same apartment building and were neighbors, they walked together back toward the building
e by side.
Wyatt slowed his pace to match Chloe’s, and they walked side
“Your cooking is really good. Dinner was delicious, so thanks again,” Wyatt said, breaking the silence.
“Don’t mention it. You helped me out today, so I’m glad you liked the sandwich,” Chloe replied with a smile. Usually, cooking made her happy, but tonight she felt especially proud, perhaps because of Wyatt’s genuine appreciation.
He seemed so easy to please–it made her feel accomplished.
“When I was out just now, I noticed there are a lot of elderly people and kids living around here. It’s a lively neighborhood,” Chloe remarked, recalling how active the area seemed during her walk.
She liked how bustling the neighborhood was, a stark contrast to the empty and quiet villa she used to live in, which had always felt too lonely for her.
Wyatt had been living in the area for nearly three months but hadn’t paid much attention to his neighbors. Hearing Chloe’s observation, he paused, feeling a bit strange. He had been so caught up in his work that he hadn’t noticed the people around him, nor had anyone ever talked to him about something unrelated to his experiments.
7 confirmed with my colleague earlier about the time, Professor Lauren has been home these past few days, so I plan to visit her tomorrow morning at 9 amb that work for you?” Wyatt asked, shifting the conversation back to their plan to visit the professor.
–
Chloe hadn’t expected things to move so quickly. She had thought they’d go the next day or the day after, but not so early tomorrow. She felt unprepared but knew there was no avoiding it.
After years of avoiding her mentor, the thought of meeting Professor Lauren again made her incredibly
anxious.
Wyatt noticed the shift in her expression but chose not to ask about it. He didn’t pry into other people’s
personal matters.
“Is there a problem?” he asked.
“No, it’s fine. I appreciate you helping me,” Chloe said, shaking her head. She knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep that night.
The next morning, the weather was gloomy and looked like it might rain. Chloe, already exhausted from a restless night, felt even worse because of the dreary weather.
She barely managed to eat a quick breakfast as she waited for 9 a.m. to arrive.
At exactly 9, the doorbell rang, and Wyatt was standing outside her door.
The night had given Chloe enough time to compose herself. As they drove, Wyatt stopped by a supermarket, and Chloe suddenly asked him to pull over.
“I need to pick up a few things. Do you need anything?” she asked, assuming Wyatt would have already prepared something to bring as a gift..
But when she turned to look at him, she saw Wyatt’s confused expression.
“Why would you need to buy anything?” he asked, clearly puzzled.
Chloe was taken aback. Didn’t everyone buy a small gift when visiting someone, especially someone they hadn’t seen in a long time? It was common courtesy, right?
“Wait, don’t tell me you’ve never brought anything when visiting someone’s home before?” Chloe asked, realizing something.
Wyatt, looking slightly embarrassed, nodded honestly.
“No, I never thought of it,” he admitted.
Chloe couldn’t help but feel surprised. She realized that perhaps this was the difference between someone as accomplished as Wyatt and ordinary people. It had never occurred to him to bring a gift, but now that she had pointed it out, he understood it might be a polite gesture, especially since they hadn’t

seen the professor in years.
Seeing his reaction, Chloe didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. **This must be the difference between brilliant minds and the rest of us,** she thought.
But regardless, Wyatt agreed to stop at the supermarket, and they we gifts before heading to the professor’s house.
