Chapter 84
A vegetative state?
The moment those words registered, Kylie felt as if an invisible hand had clenched atmund her heart, constricting her breath.
Her face turned deathly pale
How could this have happened?
she knew exactly what it meant.
A vegetative state meant that a person could breathe on their own. Their pulse, blood pressure, and body temperattier would all be stable, but they had no awareness, no cognitive function, and couldn’t talk
it was as if they were already gone. No recognition, no voluntary movement just an empty shell.
“In recent years, the chances of walding up from a vegetative state have increased,” Sebastian said in a calm but serious voice. “Most exprits now agree that someone has to be unconscious for over 12 months before they can officially be classified as vegetative.
“We don’t know when he’ll wake up, but don’t lose hope just yet.”
Kylie stood frozen in place. She still couldn’t wrap her mind around it.
Just a moment ago, they’d been laughing together, and everything had been fine.
Everything was supposed to be fine..
“Have you contacted his family?” Sebastian shifted the conversation. After all, there was no way they could keep something this big a sectet Kylie shook her head “No. I don’t have his parents‘ contact information.” As she spoke, her eyes darted around as if searching for something.
“His phone is here.“Sebastian teached for the pile of bloodstained clothes beside the operating table and pulled out a phone before handing it to Kylie. The screen was shattered, but the phone still worked.
Kylie pressed the power button.
The screen lit up, but it required either a fingerprint or a
or a passcode to unlock.
Owen’s lockscreen wallpaper was a waterfall at Starlight Summit. It was a breathtaldingly beautiful scene. They used to go there all the time.
Instead of using Owen’s finger to unlock it, she hesitated and tried entering a passcode first.
She typed in his birthday.
Incorrect.
Just then, a thought surfaced in her mind.
She tried again. This time, she keyed in her own birthday.
The phone unlocked.
Kylie stared at the screen, and her grip tightened as a storm of emotions swirled inside her.
Her heartfelt even heavier now
She quickly found Owen’s mother’s contact, took a deep breath, and after a briet moment obesitation, pressed the call button.
The phone rang for a long time, but it was probably due to the time difference Hut no one answere
She was about to hang up when, suddenly, the call comected.
A gentle, slightly drowsy voice came through, “Owen? Why are you calling me at this home?”
Just from her voice, Kylie could tell that Owen’s mother, Felicia Lindt, was a kind woman.
Her throat tightened as guilt, reinose, and an unbeatable sense of responsibility weighed down on her. It was almost impossible for her to speak. “Mrs. Lloyd. It’s Kylie,” slur finally forced out.
“Gil, Kyls! It’s you.” Felicia sounded pleasantly surprised. “You took such good care of Owen back then. Inever got the chance to properly thank you. “He’s always thought about you, you know, just a few days ago, he told me he ran into you in Seville. Look at you two–widt stall world.” Tears welled up in Kylie’s eyes, blurring her vision,
She bit her lip and swallowed back the lump in her throat to stop hriselt finnurrying.
Felicia paused and asked, “You’re calling me at
te… is something wWONGH
Kylie inhaled sharply “Mrs. Lloyd her voice cached.
#felicia’s tone shifted, and her wannth was replaced by a tight, as edge. “What happened?”
