Chapter 15
Before leaving, Abigail shot me a furious glare, as if she was blaming me for deliberately making things hard for her precious lover.
Suppressing the anger boiling inside me, I followed them both downstairs to the trash bins.
The stench was overwhelming, with spills and foul–smelling liquid pooling around the area.
Joshua took a few hesitant steps toward the bins, immediately covering his nose and mouth, grimacing in disgust. “Oh my God, it reeks. How am I supposed to find anything in there?”
He shook his head and stepped back, turning to Abigail with a whiny tone. “Abigail, maybe I could just go to the store and buy some new things to give to Samuel instead?”
Abigail hesitated, glancing back at me as if silently pleading for me to let it go.
But I shook my head, my expression cold, leaving no room for negotiation.
“Do
you think that’s an option? No matter how new or expensive whatever you buy is, it won’t be Kayla’s things.”
I took a deep breath, my voice steady and firm. “Let me make this clear one more time. I want Kayla’s belongings back. Every single one of them. Do you understand?”
My resolve was unbreakable.
Joshua looked like he wanted to argue, but Abigail quickly grabbed his arm, stopping him.
She shook her head and said softly, “Joshua, just do it. If he calls the police, it’ll damage your public image and hurt your acting career.”
That seemed to hit the mark.
Joshua’s shoulders slumped, and with a resigned sigh, he moved reluctantly back to the garbage bins and began digging through the trash. The overpowering smell made him gag repeatedly.
After what felt like an eternity, he finally managed to retrieve Kayla’s belongings and tossed them onto the ground.
“Here, I found them!” he snapped, pointing at the items with a look of utter distaste.
“Samuel, I got back all your sister’s things, exactly as they were. Is that enough now?”
I let out a cold laugh, unflinching. “Is just retrieving them enough? You’re going to clean them up
for me.”
“Samuel!” Abigail finally snapped, standing up and glaring at me. “You’d better not take this too far!”
“I’m the one taking it too far?”
Her accusation made me laugh in disbelief.
I looked at her with a cold smile and replied mockingly, “Fine. You don’t have to clean them. But don’t blame me for what happens next.”
With that, I pulled out my phone and started dialing.
“Alright, alright! Samuel, I’ll clean them, okay?”
Joshua looked genuinely frightened. He hurriedly picked up Kayla’s things, one by one, and dragged Abigail along to the nearest dry cleaner.
As they left, I caught Joshua shooting me a vicious glare.
I just shook my head, amused, wondering how long it would take for Abigail to realize the true nature of this “precious” lover of hers.
He was used to being the center of attention, adored and indulged by everyone around him. But as long as he kept dealing with me, all he’d get was humiliation and frustration.
How long could he really put up with that?
I returned to my rented apartment and lay down to rest.
Abigail didn’t reach out to me at all that night.
Not that it mattered. I knew that they wouldn’t dare to go back on their word.
After all, Abigail was worried I’d actually call the cops, and as for Joshua, he was even more afraid of his future getting ruined than of returning the stuff.
Sure enough, early the next morning, I got a call from Abigail.
I went back to what used to be our home, and there, on the table, she had laid out Kayla’s belongings, all freshly cleaned and neatly arranged.
I held Kayla’s things as if they were treasures, feeling tears well up in my eyes.
Abigail watched me with a complex expression, then asked quietly, “Samuel, in your heart… Kayla was always more important, wasn’t she?”
