Mia’s pain was sharp, tears welling in her eyes. “Hunter can’t you see she’s faking it?”
Someone as perceptive as Hunter had to know Jenna was only pretending. But he still chose to indulge her. Here Mia was, genuinely hurt, and not only did he not care, he accused her of faking it. Was he this heartless simply because he didn’t love her?
“All I see is her passed out, while you’re standing just fine,” Hunter said slowly, his words deliberate and cold. “Mia, come with me. Or tomorrow, don’t bother coming to work.”
The harshness of his tone shocked Mia, leaving her shattered. “I thought someone like you would know how to separate work from personal matters,” she said, her voice trembling. “Turns out, I was just fooling myself.”
It was cruelly ironic. The other woman spread rumors about her, and now her own husband was threatening her career to defend that woman.
Mabel, who had been watching silently, finally spoke. “Hunter, Jenna’s fainted. You should take her to the hospital. I’ll see that Mia gets back safely.”
Hunter shot her a cold look. “You’re family. There’s no need for you to lower yourself to meet with her like this. Next time you want to talk to Mia, call me, and I’ll bring her to you.”
Then he turned to Mia, his gaze sharp and unfeeling. “If you keep dragging this out, I’ll assume you’re stalling on purpose. If anything happens to Jenna, do you think you can take responsibility?”

“Mia,” Hunter’s voice broke her thoughts.
Mia took a deep breath, tilting her head up to meet his gaze. “Hunter, do you even have a heart?” Her fists clenched so tightly her knuckles ached.
“Let’s go.” He spoke without looking at her, his tone cold and commanding.
Mia let out a bitter laugh. “And what if I refuse?”
For three years, she had done everything he asked, afraid to upset him. Yet, he still didn’t care for her. Why should she, keep listening now?
Hunter finally looked at her, and their gazes locked, unspoken words lingering in the air between them.
“I’ll call Sam and have him find a reason to fire you on the spot,” he said, his voice low and merciless. Mia’s heart tightened, the sharpness of his words cutting through her.

Mia felt her heart break but forced herself to turn away, leaving without another word.
As she walked off, Mabel’s voice followed her, laced with scorn. “Leaving without so much as a goodbye? She has no manners whatsoever!”
Hunter raised an eyebrow. “She wasn’t exactly raised with any. No one taught her those things. Now that you’re her mother–in–law, maybe you should spend some time teaching her proper etiquette. We wouldn’t want her embarrassing us.”
His voice was soft but unhurried, and Mia heard every word with painful clarity. The ache in her heart spread until it felt like every part of her body hurt.
