When Evelyn called, Maria didn’t pick up for a long time. It was only around 8:00 pm–not too late. Maria was quite the spirited one, always watching drama and scrolling through videos. She wouldn’t have gone to bed this early.
So, Evelynn tried the landline at home instead. A housekeeper answered. “Mrs. Grant, Mrs. Grant Senior hasn’t been feeling well these past two days. She’s resting now–barely had an appetite all day.”
Evelyn couldn’t help but worry. “What happened? Is it her blood pressure?”
“The family doctor checked on her. She caught a cold, and her blood pressure has been unstable. Mrs. Grant, if you have time, could you come home? We tried convincing her to take better care of herself, but she won’t listen to us…”
Evelyn hesitated for a moment. Now that she knew Maria was sick, pretending nothing had happened didn’t sit right with her.
Besides, Maria had always treated her with so much kindness. No matter how she looked at it, she should go see her.
“Alright. I’ll be there soon.”
After quickly unpacking her things, she headed to Grant Manor. She had initially planned to ask Maria whether Lucas had been home, but now, she would have to go back and see for herself.
When she arrived, a housekeeper handed her a pair of slippers. She noticed Maria resting on the couch in the living room. The moment Maria heard movement, she immediately sat up and smiled warmly.
“Evie, you’re back! They told me you’re coming, so I waited for you. Did you just get off work?”
Seeing that Maria’s complexion wasn’t too bad, Evelyn felt a little more at ease. “Grandma, how are you feeling? I heard you’ve barely eaten.”
Maria took Evelyn’s hand kindly. “It’s nothing. I’m getting old–aches and pains are normal. Skipping a couple of meals is just a good detox.”
Evelyn frowned slightly. “That won’t do. Tell me what you feel like eating, and I’ll make it for you.”
Maria’s mood immediately lifted. “Really? How about oatmeal? Yours always tastes the best.”
Evelyn smiled. “All right. Just give me a moment.”
Back when she was married to Lucas, she had honed her cooking skills just for him. Maria had tasted her cooking before and often craved it.
Now, as Evelyn cooked effortlessly in the kitchen, she realized it had been a while since she last cooked. Ever since she started working at the Flying Seal Group, she no longer had to rush home during lunch breaks to cook for Lucas. It was a relief, really.
But just as she finished preparing the oatmeal and was setting the table, a car horn sounded from outside.
Lucas had returned. His gaze immediately landed on Evelyn, who was busy preparing dinner. His sharp eyes swept over her slender figure wearing an apron. A fleeting, unreadable emotion flickered in his eyes.
Maria beamed the moment she saw him. “I was just about to call you! Look at this–Evie knew you must be tired from work, so she specially cooked dinner for you. No one else treats you with, this much care.”
Evelyn froze for a moment. She could feel Lucas‘ gaze shifting toward her. A sense of awkwardness crept in as she shot Maria a helpless look.
She knew Maria was trying to mend their relationship—hoping to warm things up between them and that Lucas would appreciate her more.
But it was useless. She had done this for three years, and he had never cared. He probably just saw her as some desperate fool trying to please him, especially now, when they were on the brink of divorce. What would he even think?
Sure enough, Lucas‘ voice carried his usual detached mockery. “There are housekeepers for that. There’s no need to waste your effort.”
Even though she was used to his indifference, she still felt a dull ache in her chest. She never expected him to reciprocate her feelings, but did he really have to belittle her so easily?
Even Maria was taken aback. “How is that the same?”
Lucas simply sat down at the table and easily shifted the subject. “Grandma, are you feeling better?”
“You two live a good life together, and I’ll live for another 20 years!” Maria huffed.
Evelyn stayed silent. Lucas, however, simply chuckled, unbothered. “As long as you stop worrying so much, you’ll be healthy for years to come.”
Maria shot him a glare, then turned to Evelyn with concern. “Eat more. You’ve gotten thinner again. Just how hard are they working you out there? Why don’t you move back home? It’ll be easier for me to take care of you.
Lucas glanced at Evelyn briefly. She didn’t know how to explain that it wasn’t work that had drained her it was her illness.
So, instead, she simply served Marla the oatmeal and brushed off the subject. Maria’s appetite seemed to have improved. She even finished an extra half bowl of oatmeal
By the time they were done, the pot Eveyln had made was nearly empty. Even Lucas had eaten quite a bit. She wasn’t surprised. No matter how indifferent be was to her, he had always appreciated her cooking
