Mia put
put down her utensils and looked up at the woman in front of her, Jane Yates.
Back when Mia first joined the firm, they had gone out together to meet with prospective clients, enduring countless difficult situations and drinking until they could hardly stand.
Mia had never complained, pushing through those challenging times with grit, and she had always felt grateful for Jane’s companionship during those early days.
Over the past couple of years, Mia and Jane had occasionally teamed up to uncover the truth behind cases. Each collaboration had been smooth, and they had always worked well together. Mia wasn’t one to share sentimental words or open up easily, but Jane had always held a special place in her heart.
Now, however, she felt a pang of disappointment.
Seeing Mia’s discomfort, Mandy quickly picked up the glass meant for her, downing it in one go. “Mia’s not feeling well, so I’ll take this one for her! Boss, here’s to you!” Mandy choked a bit, coughing as the strong liquor went down.
Mia quickly poured her some water and held it out. “Here, drink some water.”
Jane, taken aback by Mandy’s gesture, burned with irritation. Her tone sharp, she said, “Well, Mia, you sure have friends lining up to drink for you!”
Mia ran a hand through her hair, then stood up, her gaze meeting Jane’s with a clear intensity. “I’ve been grateful to you for a long time, Jane. But from this moment on, I’m letting that gratitude go.” She poured herself a fresh glass and turned to the boss beside her
“Boss, thank you for all the guidance and trust you’ve given me over the years. It’s hard to see you go, but I know you’re moving on to even bigger things. Here’s to meeting you again someday with your career even more brilliant than it is now!” With that, she raised the glass and downed it in one gulp.

“I’m just going to the restroom. Carry on without me,” Mia said, excusing herself as she walked off. Watching her leave, Jane clenched her jaw, feeling a surge of resentment. She hated how Mia always seemed so composed and untouchable, as if she had everything under control. Despite her own accomplishments, Jane always felt overshadowed by Mia’s effortless confidence.
Mia hurried to the restroom, and once there, she pressed her fingers to her throat, trying to make herself vomit. Jane hadn’t been wrong about her drinking ability in the past. But now, pregnant, alcohol was out of the question.
After throwing up, she leaned against the stall door, breathing deeply to steady herself. Just then, voices drifted in from outside.
“Jenna, we’re all so envious! Your fiancé is not only handsome but wealthy, and he’s so thoughtful!”
“The way he deboned the fish for you was just too sweet!”
“They say he lives in a really grand mansion! When will you take us for a tour? We’re dying to see it!”
