Chapter 14
“Do you not know about it?” Maria was infuriated as she sensed that something was wrong.
She continued, “I booked tickets for you two for a two–day trip at Reis Mountain. Lucas told me he had already given you the tickets when I asked him about it yesterday.”
Evelyn was confused as Lucas hadn’t mentioned anything about it. However, it was clear to her that he did not want to go on a vacation with her and had deceived Maria, hoping to brush things off.
“Grandma, I had something to do at the very last minute, so…”
“It’s the weekend. What can you possibly be doing? Don’t try to cover for the rascal. Evie, why don’t you two go up there now? I’ve already arranged everything for you two. I’ll go and push him.”
Trying to stop Maria from doing so, Evelyn confessed, “Grandma, actually, Lucas and I have already…”
“What about you two?” Maria’s tone softened as she spoke to Evelyn.
It was obvious that Maria did not know that they had filed for divorce. Had Lucas not informed the Grant family about it?
Otherwise, Maria would not have arranged such a trip for them.
Evelyn felt slightly frustrated by the turn of events. Maria was in poor health, and she had a heart condition. Was Lucas just waiting for the right time to break the news to Maria?
If that was the case, Maria might not be able to handle the shock if she were to admit the truth now. She didn’t want to be the bad guy either.
Since the divorce papers had already been signed, all that was left was to finalize the legal process. They had enough time for Maria to come to terms with their divorce.
After giving it some thought, Evelyn claimed, “It’s alright, Grandma. He told me about it already, and I’ll head over there now.”
She had only planned to smooth things over with Maria, and she had no plans of going there.
However, Maria suddenly said, “I’ll send you a car as my driver is familiar with the roads there. A young couple needs to spice things up every once in a while. “You two can take the next two days to rekindle your relationship. Please try to give me a great–grandchild by the end of the year!” she urged with hopeful enthusiasm. Before Evelyn could refuse, Maria hung up the phone and went off to make the necessary arrangements.
Evelyn rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on. She knew exactly what was on Maria’s mind.
Throughout the three years where she had been married to Lucas, their relationship had always been stale and anyone could see it.
Moreover, the fact that they had not had a child despite being married for three years was something the older generation found hard to accept.
That was why she had dutifully scheduled intimate moments with Lucas during her ovulation to fulfill her duty to the Grant family.
He had no interest in touching her outside of the times they had agreed on.
Lucas was in perfect health, yet she had never gotten pregnant.
At first, she assumed it was because of her uterine injury she had years ago that was making things difficult for her to conceive.
She had believed that with the proper treatment, she would eventually be pregnant.
However, her cervical cancer diagnosis had extinguished the glimmer of hope she once had.
Maria was incredibly efficient as a driver contacted Evelyn in no time.
To keep up with the charade, she gave the driver the location of a nearby shopping center rather than her actual residence, hiding the fact that she and Lucas were already living separately. She wasn’t sure what Lucas had planned regarding their divorce, so she decided to play things safe for now.
Despite getting into the car, she did not contact Lucas.
She believed that Lucas had not told her about the trip because he did not want to go with her. There was no way he would possibly show up and accompany her for two days.
So, she inight as well spend two days alone to keep Maria happy. It was a good chance for her to relax anyway.
The vacation lodges were located high up at the peak of Reis Mountain. There was also a ski resort nearby, and visitors could even witness the breathtaking scenic view of the sun shining over the mountains.
After checking into her room, she pushed her suitcase to her room door, only to see two people who were just returning from outside.
Lucas and Tiffany were chatting as they walked side by side. Tiffany was even smiling brightly.
Evelyn’s expression flickered. The scene before her was a harsh slap to the face.
Lucas‘ eyes darkened slightly after seeing her, but his expression remained emotionless. Tiffany, on the other hand, was smiling faintly, seemingly finding the situation rather amusing. Humiliation washed over Evelyn. What did they think about her now?
“Lucas, where’s the key card?” Tiffany did not greet Evelyn as she did not see a need to do so.
He handed the key card to Tiffany, and she entered the room next door, leaving the door ajar. It was obvious she had kept the door open for him to enter later.
Were they sharing a room?
Lucas turned to Evelyn, asking, “Did Grandma tell you about it?”
Evelyn replied, “She did.”
“Why don’t you switch coms?” Lucas‘ gaze was ice cold.
Although he had phrased his words as a question, he had a firm and forceful attitude and stance on the matter.
She immediately understood what he meant.
He was staying in the room next door with Tiffany. If the two of them were to do anything intimate, the fact that she was next door would probably disgust them halfway through. Was she being inconsiderate and interrupting them by showing up here?
