Chapter 13
Tiffany had gotten a certificate to become a remote pilot and controlled the drone with ease, winning her the applause and cheers of the crowd.
She was talented and confident.
It was no wonder why it was love at first sight for Lucas.
Women like her were indeed capable of captivating any man.
Evelyn objectively admitted to Tiffany’s charm. After being nurtured since a young age, Tiffany was gentle and kind. Not only that, but she was smart, hardworking, and beautiful.
She easily became the center of attention wherever she went.
However, everything that Tiffany had was stolen from Evelyn.
Tiffany’s mother, Millie Healy, used to be best friends with Evelyn’s mother, Naomi Reed. Millie came from a poor background, so Naomi decided to pay for Millie’s education and supported her through grad school.
However, Millie ended up stealing Naomi’s thesis which Naomi worked hard on for over two years, and published it under her own name.
She had stolen Naomi’s work and the glory that came with it. After jumping over Naomi to climb the social ladder, she got pregnant and moved abroad to marry a wealthy foreigner.
Hence, Tiffany had managed to shine in life. She did not have to do a thing as everything that should have been Evelyn’s went to her instead.
Evelyn’s gaze darkened, and she only felt the irony of the situation.
Due to Tiffany’s outstanding results, a bunch of reporters rushed up to her after she left the arena, hoping to interview her and Lucas.
Evelyn stood in between the crowd, and they bumped into her several times as they rushed past her.
She didn’t even have the chance to dodge. Stumbling, a sharp pain flared up in her ankle, but she managed to steady herself.
Then, she heard a reporter asking, “You two don’t look like just friends. Should we be expecting some good news?”
Evelyn looked up.
Lucas was protecting Tiffany in his embrace, stopping the reporters from touching her. His gaze was cold and the air around him was tense. “Please be careful not to touch her.” The female reporters immediately brightened at Lucas‘ protectiveness.
“Mr. Grant, you’ve treated Ms. Moore so well. Are you planning to get married soon? The two of you are like a match made in heaven.”
Evelyn wasn’t sure if she was imagining things, but Lucas seemed to have swept his gaze over her at that moment.
She didn’t know if he had done it on purpose. Was he warning her to “stay in her place“?
Evelyn endured the sharp pain in her ankle as the pain moved upward, causing her stomach to ache. Biting her lip, she got up, planning to leave the place.
Suddenly, someone grabbed her wrist.
When she met Jason’s cautious gaze, he asked, “What do you think you’re doing? I’d advise you to stay put and not make a scene. It’s just a little interview. There’s no need for you to slander Tiffany. If you do so, everyone will end up feeling awkward and embarrassed.”
Evelyn froze momentarily before she understood what he was implying.
Did he think that she would rush up to them and tear them apart? Did he think she would turn to the cameras and start spewing nonsense?
Her pale face turned frigid as she shook his hand off of her. Glaring at Jason, she had a sharp, icy look and left in the silence.
Seeing her leave stubbornly, he was momentarily dazed. He stared at her retreating figure for some time before looking down at his hand that she had shaken off.
The lingering warmth from her skin made his throat dry, but the look in her eyes was freezing. In fact, it looked more like hatred.
Throughout the past three years, Evelyn had treated all of Lucas‘ friends well. She was always well mannered and eager to please them, so he was taken aback by her behavior today. Had he been imagining things? Or had Evelyn gone crazy?
“What are you looking at? You seemed like you’re lost in thought,” Mason commented as he walked over and patted him.
Snapping back to his senses, Jason frowned and curled his fingers. “It’s nothing. Let’s go!”
That was probably a new trick Evelyn had come up
with!
Evelyn took out an unlabelled bottle of pills from her back and swallowed a pill. The bitterness made her frown as the pain in her abdomen intensified, causing her to curl up to elevate the pain.
Luckily, she had not driven to the venue. She quickly sent Sebastian a message and left the place.
The locally made medication was becoming less effective. She needed a certain medication from abroad to stabilize her condition.
After contacting her doctor and confirming her prescription, she took a painkiller and buried herself under the covers, sleeping through to the next afternoon.
She was awakened by the sound of her phone ringing Glancing at her phone, she realized it was a call from Maria.
After ensuring that her voice did not sound weak, she answered the call. “Grandma?”
Maria seemed to be in a good mood, asking, “Evie, how’s your trip to Reis Mountain with Lucas going?”
“Reis Mountain?” Evelyn asked in confusion.
