Chapter 4
Valerie had no idea how Fabian suddenly ended up here. Reflexively, she shot up from the bed and quickly threw on her clothes.
Seeing the broken look on Fabian’s face, she almost spilled the truth. But then, reason kicked back in.
She fought to force a smirk on her face. “I saved you? What are you talking about? I got this wound when I was in prison. I fought with another woman over a man and got burned.
“The women in there are ruthless. The men liked me, and when those women couldn’t get to them, they had to get back at me this way.”
Fabian’s face turned red with fury. The compassion in his eyes vanished. It was replaced by pure fury. He seized her throat as though he wanted to strangle her on the spot.
“You’re really heartless, Valerie Hartman! Is that how desperate you are for a man? Didn’t I satisfy you enough? What was our relationship even worth?”
Valerie’s face flushed red from the choking, and she coughed desperately. But as soon as he released his grip, she laughed.
“What was it worth? You were just a fool who was too in love. Fabian, I really wanted to marry you, but loving just one person for a lifetime is too hard. Actually, I was only playing around with the other man.
“If your mom hadn’t caught me cheating, I wouldn’t need to run her over, and we wouldn’t be in this mess now. After all, no one else treated me as well as you did. Don’t you agree?”
Fabian’s face twisted with rage. He pulled his hand away in disgust and said coldly, “You make me sick, Valerie. Loving you was my biggest mistake.”
He didn’t spare Valerie another glance. In a fit of rage, he slammed the door behind him.
She was finally left all alone in the room. Valerie weakly wrapped her arms around herself and slowly sank down at the foot of the bed.
Wasn’t this what she wanted? For him to utterly despise her and never think of her again?
So why did her heart ache so much? It felt as if someone had taken a knife and ripped her heart open, then poured salt onto the wound.
It would pass, she told herself.
After getting dressed, she left her room. Sasha insisted that Valerie drive, saying she needed some company while shopping.
The Porter family had a driver, so Valerie couldn’t understand why Sasha wanted her to drive, but she didn’t ask any further questions.
She sat behind the wheel and started the car. But just as the engine hummed to life, Sasha suddenly lunged in front of the car and collapsed there. She was covered in blood.
Valerie froze in shock. The car had barely started moving. Even if it had hit her, it shouldn’t have been this severe.
So where did all that blood come from?
Before Valerie could figure it out, Fabian rushed over.
He immediately picked Sasha up. His voice was full of urgency as he asked, “Sasha, are you okay?”
Sasha weakly leaned against him. Her eyes were pitiful as they locked onto Valerie.
“Fab, don’t blame Valerie. She didn’t mean to.”
Then, suddenly, she coughed up a mouthful of blood.
The bright red splatter hit Fabian like a punch to the gut. He raised his head and stared coldly at Valerie. The image of Amelia dying under the wheels of the car flashed in his mind.
At that moment, he completely lost control.
“You really never learn, Valerie! Did Sasha catch you with another man? Is that why you did this to her?”
Grinding his teeth, Fabian lifted Sasha and placed her in the car before climbing into the driver’s seat himself.
The engine roared to life, and Fabian’s eyes started to burn with rage.
As he stared at Valerie in front of him, the images of Amelia’s death and Sasha spitting blood repeatedly overlapped in his mind, like a net that trapped him completely.
He suddenly felt as though an invisible hand was squeezing his heart. The pain was so intense he could barely breathe.
The images and Sasha’s groans came again. Finally, he calmed himself enough to slam his foot down on the gas and sped straight toward Valerie.
