Chapter 23
Christopher said in a hoarse voice, “Ruby, we’re not young anymore. I’m begging you to give us a chance for us to make things up to you…”
The audience below were already bawling, while the online viewers were also shedding tears.
At that moment, Ian looked up. He said in a hopeful tone, “Ruby, today is the last day of the week. If you’re willing to forgive us, then come out here.”
As soon as he said that, everyone turned their attention to the entrance, watching with bated breath.
One second passed, then two, then three…
At the tenth second, the door to the venue slowly opened.
Dressed in a simple black gown, Ruby slowly walked in.
Her face was devoid of any expression as her cold gaze swept over the dazzling venue. She looked at the people on stage like she was watching a comedy.
“Ruby!” Ian and Henry exclaimed at the same time, their eyes filling with joy.
Christopher and Anna were also trembling with emotion as tears poured down their faces.
“Ruby, are you willing to forgive us?” Anna asked in a shaky voice, her eyes shining with anticipation.
Ruby regarded them icily. Then, she said sarcastically, “Forgive you? No, I’m just here to watch the consequences of your show of remorse.”
Her voice was heard all over the world via the live stream. Everyone stared at her in shock.
Ian’s face instantly drained of color. He asked in disbelief, “Ruby, w–what do you mean?”
Ruby let out a cold chuckle before replying sardonically, “Did you think that my heart would soften because you showed remorse? No, I had never planned on forgiving you.”
A pained look crossed Henry’s eyes. “Ruby, then why did you give us a week’s time?” he asked quietly.
Ruby’s frosty gaze landed on their faces. She said mockingly, “First I gave you hope, then I destroyed it. Isn’t this what you always did to me in the past? I’m merely returning the favor–an eye for an eye.”
Her voice was cold and firm, piercing everyone’s heart like a sharp blade.
Anna and Christopher turned ashen. They were shivering like they could collapse at any time.
Ian’s eyes were clouded with pain. His voice cracking, he said, “Ruby, we know we’ve made a mistake… Don’t do this…”
Ruby gazed at them icily. “You’ve lost. From now on, we’ll never cross paths again,” she said resolutely.
With that, she turned around and walked away with finality.
lan and Henry wanted to run after her, but her trigid glare deterred them.
“Ruby!” Anna screamed in despair as tears streamed down her face.
Ruby left the venue without even looking back.
The venue fell deathly silent.
lan and Henry stood there, watching Ruby’s retreating back fade into the distance. A feeling of helplessness overcame them
They knew that they had lost her forever.
Christopher and Anna fell to the floor, crying.
“What… What have we done wrong…” Anna wailed, her voice shaking as though she was about to break down. It felt like the world had just come crashing down on her.
Jan’s eyes were filled with anguish. In a voice that was nearly inaudible, he murmured, “Ruby… we know we’ve made a mistake…”
sheet.
Henry’s face was as pale as a sheet. The wound on his back was still oozing blood, but it was like he couldn’t feel any pain at all.
He knew that they could never fully make it up to her in this lifetime.
Stepping out from the venue, Ruby gazed up at the sky.
The sun cast its rays on her face, warin and radiant.
She knew that from this day on, she was about to embark on a brand new life.
And, the people who’d hurt her before would torever live in temorse toward her. This was karma; they had merely gotten their retribution.
