The harsh smell of disinfectant filled his nose, and the bright fluorescent lights above him made his eyes ache. He tried to move his body, but the pain that shot through him made him gasp in agony.
“Are you awake?” Daphne’s voice came from beside him, cold and tinged with frustration.
Nathan turned to his side and saw Daphne sitting next to the bed, her face dark with anger and disappointment.
Her voice was laced with barely contained rage as she scolded, “How could I have a brother like you? Do you realize how close you were to being crippled? Now that you’re awake, don’t rest here anymore. Get your ass back to Vexford! Don’t you ever set foot in Ivory Bay again!”
Nathan ignored her harsh words. His eyes were desperate as he asked, “Where’s Anna? Has she come to visit me?”
Daphne’s face darkened even more. She opened her mouth, ready to reply. Just then, the door to the ward was pushed open.
Annabelle walked in, holding Louie’s hand.
Nathan’s eyes instantly lit up, a glimmer of hope rising in his chest. He struggled to sit up, but the pain from his injuries made him
gasp in sharp discomfort. Ignoring the pain, he looked at Annabelle as he said urgently, “Anna, you came. Please, just give me one chance to talk to you. Just one.” Annabelle looked at him without any expression.
Louie, however, smiled lightly and said in a calm voice, “It’s fine, Anna. Just talk to him one last time.”
Annabelle nodded and walked to the bedside. Her gaze was indifferent as she looked down at Nathan. “What do you want to say?”
Nathan’s throat tightened. His voice was hoarse and almost unrecognizable as he stammered, “Anna… I–I’m sorry. I really know I was wrong. Please forgive me. I beg you. I can’t live without you.”
JAnnabelle shook her head and replied resolutely, “Nathan, I’ve already let go. How do you feel now?”
Nathan froze for a moment, then gave a bitter laugh. “It’s unbearable. I truly feel like I can’t go on, Anna.”
Annabelle nodded and said calmly, “When I heard what you said in the club, I felt the same way. But now, I’m at peace. I’ve let go, Nathan. You need to live your life.”
Nathan’s face turned ashen. His heart seemed to break as he felt an overwhelming sense of loss. He shook his head desperately and pleaded, “No, Anna, I can’t let go. After having someone as good as you in my life, I’ll never be able to let go. I can’t see anyone else. I only want you-”
Annabelle interrupted him coldly, “That’s your problem. I’ll have children with Louie and grow old with him. Your life is no longer connected to mine. I told you before–the best thing about being older is knowing when to walk away. Nathan, let’s never meet again.”
Tears filled Nathan’s eyes, and despair overwhelmed him. He closed his eyes, and the scene from that day at the club flashed in his mind. Annabelle had asked him if he wanted to marry her. How had he responded then?
With lies and indifference. At that moment, he’d never imagined that one day he would beg for her forgiveness so humbly.
He shut his eyes and began to drift into a fantasy.
That day, Annabelle held his hand again, her eyes filled with a quiet hope.
“Nate, I’ll be turning 30 next year, and my parents have been pressuring me to get married. I know that you don’t want things between us to go public, so I never told them that I have a boyfriend. They’ve arranged several marriage prospects for me What do you think about that?”
This time, he held her hand, slipped on a ring, and kissed her ring finger with all the love he had in his heart.
