Chapter 25
I glance at the time on my phone for the umpteenth time this night. 10 p.m.
Aaron is not back yet, it’s not like I am waiting up for him, it’s more like I want to hear what he has to say about the situation that happened earlier.
Candace is beside me, bravely fighting sleep but hilariously failing.
“Hey Dace, come on let’s go inside.” I carry her and she immediately rests her head in the crook of my neck.
By the time I get to our room, she is fast asleep. I lay her gently on the bed and cover her with the duvet.
Tam not sleepy yet for some reason, possibly because I need to know whether or not Rosa’s sudden arrival means something when it comes to our contract.
1 go back to the living-room and switch the channel to a reality TV show. I gasp in surprise as I watch a woman throw red wine all over another woman for a reason I don’t know yet.
They are yelling expletives at each other and the censor sounds make me snort in amusement.
The victim in the situation is wearing a white suit and the red wine is all over her suit’s jacket. That stain is not coming off.”
I wonder what caused their fight. I chuckle as I imagine Rosa pouring wine over me, if that happens I am definitely asking Aaron to increase my pay
‘Aaron’ I glance at the time and it is past 11 p.m. I don’t usually notice when he comes home since I normally go to bed early. but I know he doesn’t stay out this late most times.
I face-palm as I realise something, “You are so dumb Aurora” I mutter.
Of course, he is staying out late today. His ‘fiancee came here and she was upset, he is probably with her right now explaining everything
If she knows I now, will she let him carry on the ruse till the duration of the contract is over or will she tell him to end it now?
Either way I am going to get paid but I will prefer the former. She shouldn’t let this drag on for too long, what if I make him fall in love with me?
I snort, “What?” I burst out laughing but quickly quiet down so I don’t wake Candace,
I must be in a very good mood because why would I even think about that?
Aaron, falling in love with me? I blow out a breath, “Not even in my wildest dreams.”
It’s not like I even dream about it but I know it’s not possible anyway.
Rosa is perfect for him and he is not my type. I shake my head to get rid of the thoughts, “I need to sleep.” I yawn.
I switch off the TV and go into my room. I check the time one last time, it’s almost 12 am
I am not interested in calling him and even if I was, I still don’t love his number. I keep forgetting to ask for it since I normally don’t need it.
What kind of wife doesn’t have her husband’s number though? I doubt he has mine.
I close my eyes and my thoughts fade away as I succumb to sleep.

“Candace ston
o it, right now!” Border her but she continues running round our room, leaving soap duds in her wake.
She wanted to take her Mario toy with her into the bathtub and I didn’t let her because water would probably ruin it since it runs on batteries.
When I left her in the bathroom and went into the room to take Sario so she could have that instead, she ran out after me and picked Mario..
So. I am currently chasing my two-year-old round the room and failing miserably. I stop and bend to catch my breath.
With my hands on my knees and my breath coming in short gasps, you would think I just ran a marathon or something. 1 need to start exercising frequently.
“Dace, if you take it into the bath with you, it’s going to get ruined”
She scrunches her face in confusion and c***s her head at me, raise my hands my hands in surrender and walk slowly toward her.
“Mario runs on batteries, if you take it into the water, the water will spoil it. You can take Sario instead, you always take Sario anyway.” she looks from me to the Mario toy in her hand then nods in understanding.
“Okay.” she says and drops the toy. She holds her hand out and I give her Sario, then we go back into the bathroom. There are times I forget that she prefers when I try to make her understand the situation than when I just give orders. “You are such a smart girl.” I ruffle her hair as she plays with Sano in the bath.
After we are done, we go to the kitchen to make breakfast. I am not sure Aaron is back yet but I wait till Candace is done with eating before I go and check.
I knock on the door of his study and there is no reply, I have never gone near his room before so I tentatively move toward
the area.
I knock on his door and I am met with silence. He is either not answering me on purpose or he is not home.

I go back to his study and open the door. I peep inside and see that he is not there, I am tempted to go inside to check out the books that caught my attention the few times I have been there but I don’t. I can almost hear him scolding me about it.
I snort. “You manage to sound annoying even in my imagination I go back to the living-room, Candace is giggling as she watches cartoons on the TV.
“Dace?”
She glances at me, “Uh?”
“Would you like to go out?”
Her smile widens and she claps her hands, “Yea.”
“Let’s do it.”
I dress up, put all the necessities in my purse and we leave the penthouse for the first time by ourselves.
I stand in front of the apartment building, holding Candace’s hand wondering where to go.
In the past, I always wanted to go out with Candace but I did not have the money for it so I settled on telling her stories of the adventures we would have when I finally got a job.

I look down at my daughter who is staring at the world around her with a smile, “Where do we go first Dace?”
She looks up at me and furrows her eyebrows in thoughts. Her face lights up and she lets go of my hand, “Wheee!” she squeals while waving her arms wildly in front of me.
I chuckle, “What are you doing Dace?”
“Wheeee!” she squeals again.
“Oh!” I say excitedly. She is talking about going on rides, I used to carry her on my back and run round our little apartmen I hold her hand. To the amusement park!”
She jumps excitedly. “Yaaay!”
We get to the amusement park and I am overwhelmed by the sheer amount of activities we can do.
Candace is looking around in awe. She tugs on my hand and keeps pointing excitedly at several things, but she doesn’t let g of my hand.
She doesn’trun off to check them out like the other kids are doing. It’s her first time there and I feel a little sad about that.
A woman approaches us with a wide smile on her face. She is wearing a turkey hat and glasses with googly eyes on them. Sh bends towards Candace, “Hey beautiful, what would you like to try?”
I look at her. “Everything she can.”
“You had fun today, didn’t you?” I say to Candace as I stroke her hair. We had spent all day at the amusement park and we were both tired. We got into bed as soon as we got home.
She nods sleepily, “Yea”
“Where would you like to go tomorrow?”
“Bun-jee.” she yawns and moves closer to me.

Aaron was not home when we got back. I am a bit worried since he has been radio silent for more than 24 hours at this but I figure someone would contact me if something has happened to him. Or the news will report it.

I scroll through social media but I find nothing. I drop my phone on the bedside table and hold Candace snug against my chest, “He is fine.” I whisper to the dark and fall asleep.

I chase after her trying to scold her like the other parents are doing, but happy that being there doesn’t feel alien to her

Candace giggles as 1 blow the horn in her face again. She is wearing a frog hat we got from the park, she made me wear one

We both look silly and my sides hurt from laughing. I unlock the penthouse and we go in laughing. I stop in my tracks as l are Aaron sitting on the sofa with his arms folded.
