Chapter 5
What Seraphina wasn’t aware of was that Winston had brought Asher over to her rented apartment while she was unconscious. He pushed open the door, finding everything seemingly frozen in time, just as it was five years ago.
Seraphina did not have much–just a few pieces of old clothes and some random everyday items. However, the room was full of piled–up medicine boxes and dialysis papers.
Winston crouched down and picked up one of the dialysis papers, finding it full of dates. His hand trembled as he mumbled, almost inaudible, “Has she… been doing dialysis all this while?” Asher stood by his side, his eyes reddening. Then, he walked over to the desk and opened the drawer, finding a thick diary and a family photo within. The three of them were smiling happily in the photo, as if free of any sufferings.
Asher opened the diary and read through the pages. His tears landed on the paper.
One entry read, “I had another dialysis session today, and I almost fainted out of pain. But I feel everything is worth it when I think of how Winston and Ash are alive and healthy.”
Another read, “Ash called me today, asking me when I’d be coming home. I hung up mercilessly. I’m sorry, Ash.”
Another page read, “I’m sorry, Winston. I can no longer stay by your side, but I wish for both of your happiness even without me.”
Winston walked over to Asher and took the diary over, reading through the pages. Tears started to fall uncontrollably as he choked out a sob, “She… She has been suffering on our behalf all this while, yet we—”
Asher threw himself into Winston’s arms and cried. “Daddy, I want Mommy! I want Mommy!”
