Chapter 13
Only now did Hugh realize that Kelly had picked up on everything he and Joel had said that day. She found out he and Natalie were married, and that he’d intended to keep it under wraps, with everyone else aware of it
Panic struck Hugh fast. He’d believed he’d kept the truth well hidden and could handle his relationship with Natalie and Kelly. He thought he was being careful enough.
His obsession with Natalie stemmed from a twisted resentment because she had left him for another man, feeling his desperation to keep her close forever.
But Natalie would always be the one Hugh kept on the sidelines. He’d purposely kept their relationship a secret from Kelly because she was the only one who mattered to him after he’d lost his sight.
He never thought she’d pick up Idrenian, catch on to his conversation with Jorl, and find out everything
How could Kelly be so heartless? All he felt for Natalie was nothing but obsession and pity. How could Kelly just delete all her social media and vanish without a word?
Tears welled up in Hugh’s eyes as he thought about all those years Kelly had been there for him.
Her voice was soft and comforting in the dark when she said, “Don’t worry, Hugh. I’ll always be here with you.”
“Always?”
Η
“As long as you never hurt me, it’ll be forever.”
Back then, he had pulled her close, his voice breaking. “I’d never hurt you, Kel. It’s a promise. You have to stay with me. Forever.”
But since when did everything change? Was it because of Natalie’s endless begging of the way she broke down in tears?
Bit by bit, Hugh started to take Kelly for granted, turning his attention to Natalie–the one who had left him and was now down on her buck, waiting for him to rescue her. He convinced himself that he had it all figuredout
He forgot that Kelly wasn’t the type to put up with pain forever. She’d rather walk away than stay stuck in misery,
And Kelly knew him better than anyone. She knew that if he found out she was planning to leave, he’d do anything to stop her. So, she wiped away every trace of herself and disappeared from his life without a single word.
Now that it all hit him, Hugh swallowed hard. “No, I’m not letting this happen. I won’t let you go, Kell”
He kept munuring Kelly’s name, over and over, his longing for her clear in his eyes
“Kel, I messed up. I never should’ve treated you like that over someone else. You can hit me, yell at me, do whatever you want. I don’t care. Just don’t leave me,” he pleaded, his voice hoarse from repeating it so many times.
But the one person who needed to hear it was gone. It was all for nothing now.
A fire it up in his eyes as he said with conviction, “I
“Kelly, I’ll find you, no matter what We’ll meet again!”
Hugh couldn’t let her go. She was his, and only his. He’d get on his knees, beg for her forgiveness, and do whatever it took, but he couldn’t let her slip away.
His hands shook as he pulled up Kelly’s picture from his phone’s gallery. He pressed his lips to the screen, kissing her photo with reverence.
