Chapter 19

As soon as Ernma sat down, the man across from het took out his phone, glancing between the screen and her face as if comparing her to a photo.
“Ms. Dyer, I specifically asked for an unedited, bare–faced photo. The matchmaker only gave me your ID photo. Now that you’re wearing makeup, I can’t tell what you really look like. What if your photo was misleading?”
She hadn’t expected him to drop such a bombshell the moment she sat down.
Emma wondered if Velma was so anxious to match her up that she didn’t even bother checking if these men were suitable partners.
She suppressed her emotions and maintained a polite smile. “I’m not wearing makeup–just lipstick.”
The man eved her up and down, clearly unconvinced.
“Impossible. Everyone knows that women take an hour just to put on their ‘no–makeup‘ makeup look. Ms. Dyer, I hope you know that I dislike dishonest women.”
“Then perhaps I suggest you might want to get your eyes checked,” she retorted.
The man was stunned by her remarks. “I’ve already looked into your background. Your education and work experience are decent, but your character needs further evaluation. You’re studying at Eastside University, right? I’m assuming you haven’t migrated here yet. I don’t plan on leaving Steistan. If we get married, you’ll have to settle here with me. Is that a problem for you?”
“I work in a big company in Steistan and earn about 20 thousand dollars each month. But until we’re officially together, you can’t spend my money,” the man continued with confidence.
Emma thought that he was delusional.
He didn’t want to spend his money on a woman but expected an obedient and submissive wife.
“If you register a marriage certificate with me right now and I can be sure that you won’t run away, I’ll give you a few thousand dollars a month as an allowance. But keep in mind, I have a house that my parents gifted to me as a pre–marital property.”
He paused and looked at her with anticipation.
“I’m sorry, sir. Not all women exist to revolve around men. A few thousand dollars? Please save yourself the embarrassment and keep that money to yourself. What do you think this is?
However, the man merely chuckled and leaned back in his chair.
“Women are meant to rely on men. Do you know how tough it is for men these days? I’m offering you free housing and an allowance. You should be grateful. Women have never survived without men. Don’t be so full of yourself.”
If Emma agreed, he wouldn’t mind marrying her on the spot. After all, she could always be trained later.
Emma was beautiful and fair–skinned with long legs and a slender waist. She wasn’t caked in heavy makeup like those tacky women. Instead, she had an elegant, refined air that made her beauty impossible to ignore.
The smile on Emma’s face disappeared completely. She had finally met those weird men on blind dates that people often talked about.
“Before you judge others, maybe take a good look at yourself!” She clenched her jaw, barely resisting the urge to splash her coffee in his face. She curled her lips into a mocking smile. “Sir, you came for a blind date, not to indulge in fantasies.”
“Ms. Dyer, don’t tell me you think we’re incompatible. Or do you think I’m not good enough for you? I have a car, a house, and a 20–thousand–dollar salary. I’m even willing to marry you immediately. What more do you want? Do you think you’re still young? You’re already 24 years old. If you wait much longer, no one will want you!”
“You think I’m old? Maybe take a look at your wrinkly face and that beer belly of yours! Your pettiness is probably bigger than your entire ego.”
Just then, a low chuckle came from the side.
