Chapter 20
Justin watched as the couple disappeared before him, their figures vanishing from sight. Only then did he break down and roar in anguish.
Pedestrians on the street looked at him in shock, calling him crazy. But in the past six months since Norah’s supposed death, Justin had already believed himself to be insane and dead, as if he had perished alongside her in that fire.
And now, Norah was telling him that she had faked her death just to get away from him.
“How could you? How could you do this, Norah? How could you be so heartless?”
He immediately called Jeremy and ordered an investigation into “Zora Serpentine” and the man beside her.
With this lead, it was easy to uncover the truth.
Zora’s identity was that of a student at a prestigious overseas university and the adopted daughter of the Serpentine family. The man beside her was her fiancé, the youngest son of the Lynch family.
Justin knew the Lynch family. With merely one foot in high society, the Lynch family wasn’t a major power.
“Norah, did you choose the Lynch family after leaving me once again?” His eyes burned red, possibly from pain or fury.
Justin had made up his mind. This time, no matter what it took, he would keep Norah by his side. Even if she ended up hating him, he would never let her go again.
The hatred of being abandoned twice had twisted his love into obsession.
Back home, Justin ignored everything and went straight to his room. He needed to think carefully about how to bring Norah back.
Recently, he had either been absent or bringing women home, but tonight, for once, he was alone. Seeing this, Selena saw a glimmer of hope.
She personally prepared a table full of dishes. After what she learned from the woman yesterday, she had come to a realization.
Selena was already Mrs. Johnson. Since Norah was dead, no one could take Justin away from her anymore. As time passed, Justin would naturally let go of Norah and see her devotion.
Fantasizing about a future growing old with Justin, Selena carefully carried the food upstairs and gently pushed open the door.
“Justin, I made dinner. Come and have a taste.”
Selena looked just like Norah when she smiled. She knew that no matter how angry Justin got, he had never laid a hand on her face that belonged to Norah.
But today, the moment Justin saw Selena’s face, all he could think of was Norah’s cold indifference. His anger rose in an instant.
While he couldn’t bring himself to hurt Norah, Selena was a different story. Looking at her, he uttered impassively, “Come here, Selena. Let me take a good look at you.”
Selena’s heart leaped with joy, and she quickly walked over.
She had had to endure the excruciating pain of bone–shaving and skin–sculpting and three whole days of surgery to have her face become a replica of Norah.
Justin grabbed her chin, an icy chill rising in his heart.
“Destroy this face.”
He let go afterward.
“What?” Selena couldn’t believe her ears. She must have misheard. How could Justin possibly tell her to destroy Norah’s face?
“Didn’t you hear me? I said, destroy this face!”
His sudden roar made her tremble.
That was when Selena noticed a stack of documents on the table.
Inside was a woman, her name listed as “Zora“-but just like Justin, Selena recognized her immediately.
It was Norah. Only Norah could make Justin react like this.
She wasn’t dead!
In that instant, Selena’s face turned deathly pale.
Because Norah was alive, Justin now wanted Selena to disfigure herself. He had never cared for her in the slightest.
Selena finally saw things clearly at this moment. She lost all hope immediately.
No matter what she did, she would never compare to who Norah was in Justin’s heart. She had foolishly believed the worst was over and that if she remained patient, Justin would eventually notice her.
But it was useless. Whether Norah was dead or alive, Justin would never look at her. Even his torment of her was just out of guilt for Norah.
Yes, she had done wrong. But had Justin not done worse?
Selena let out a cold laugh. Her love had been completely worn away, leaving only hatred.
