Chapter 11
Jeremy’s words hit Justin like a bomb.
He hadn’t even reacted when Selena suddenly sobered up.
“If it’s nothing urgent, it can wait until tomorrow. Justin is exhausted today,” she quickly interrupted Jeremy before he could say more, even though she was drunk just a moment ago.
As Selena had been pampered lately, Jeremy hesitated, glancing at Justin’s expression before deciding to stay silent.
“That’s right. Today is my wedding with Selena. What could possibly go wrong?”
Justin’s agreement made Selena breathe a sigh of relief. Jeremy, too, tactfully left.
But it wasn’t long before Justin, after helping Selena to the bathroom, returned to the living room. Sitting on the couch with a cold expression, he called for Jeremy.
“What happened?” he asked. He hadn’t asked in front of Selena because he had a feeling this was about Norah.
Sure enough, Jeremy’s expression tensed, and he lowered his head as he whispered, “Mr. Johnson, it’s Ms. Serpentine… Something happened to her.”
Justin’s face showed nothing but disdain. “What could possibly happen to her? If she needs more money, give it to her! After this, I want nothing to do with her!”
!
V “Ms. Serpentine… She’s dead.”
In an instant, Justin’s grip tightened around the couch’s armrest. The news was too shocking! How could Norah suddenly be dead?
His tone turned piercingly cold as he stared at Jeremy, warning, “You must have a death wish to be joking about something like this.”
Jeremy nearly collapsed to his knees in fear. How could he dare to joke about something so grave? Swallowing hard, he forced himself to continue, confirming, “It’s true, sir.
“This afternoon, we noticed that Ms. Serpentine’s house caught fire. The flames were massive, and the rescue teams couldn’t get there in time. It took hours to extinguish the fire. By the time we finally got inside… Ms. Serpentine was already beyond recognition. There was no saving her.”
Silence filled the air.
Justin’s eyes widened with disbelief. For a long moment, he remained frozen, unable to process the words. Then, as if something inside him finally snapped, his voice erupted in a furious
roar.
He yelled, “How is this possible? Why didn’t anyone tell me something this serious? What the hell are you all doing?”
“I called and sent you a message, but you never responded, sir. I also contacted Ms. Jones. She said you were busy and that there was no need to inform you regarding such a small matter.” Jeremy lowered his head respectfully, his whole body trembling.
“That’s impossible!” Justin roared again.
Aside from the wedding ceremony, Justin had kept his phone with him the entire time. No one had called him.
Overcome with rage, he grabbed his phone, ready to confront Jeremy. But when he checked his trash folder, he saw the deleted messages and missed calls from Jeremy.
His heart pounded.
Those calls and messages came just before the wedding started. Selena was the only person who could have tampered with his phone.
Justin’s face turned deathly pale, and his heartbeat accelerated. “Take me to Norah.” His voice trembled.
“Mr. Johnson, Ms. Serpentine
already-”
Justin’s eyes reddened before Jeremy could finish. “Take me to Norah!” he shouted again.
Jeremy hesitated, but in the end, he nodded.
The driver brought them to the house Justin and Norah once shared. The moment Justin stepped out of the car, he almost couldn’t believe what he was seeing.
All their memories had been reduced to ruins. Nothing was left.
He staggered across the scorched land. The heavy scent of smoke still lingering in the air was a cruel reminder of how fierce the fire had been.
And his Norah…
He walked to the very back, where a small cleared space had been marked off.
There, he saw a charred body.
For a moment, his breath seemed to stop. Justin slowly knelt down. He didn’t dare to reach out, afraid she would crumble into dust at his touch.
“Is it her?” His voice was hoarser than ever. He couldn’t accept that Norah had become this in just one day.
“It’s her. Ms. Serpentine was the only one inside.”
Hearing this confirmation, Justin felt suffocated. His bloodshot eyes welled up, and a single tear fell silently onto the scorched earth beneath him.
