Chapter 24
“If you must enter Evangeline’s world, you can only do so in a non–human form,” the system said.
It expected Joseph to hesitate, but to its surprise, his dim and lifeless eyes suddenly sparkled with determination.
“That’s fine. Please send me there now!”
The system almost malfunctioned.
Joseph must truly love Evangeline. He was willing to give up everything–his vast fortune, even his human identity.
But there was a time when he could have loved and stayed with Evangeline forever. Why must he wait until he had lost her, only to resort to such a humble way to beg for a love that would never return?
Human emotions were so complicated, and the system couldn’t fully understand them. However, it kept its promise and transported Joseph to Evangeline’s world.
After the wedding, Evangeline spent her time between work and family, while also creating romantic memories with Sterling all over the world.
One day, they went to the beach, and Evangeline spotted a fluffy creature washed up on the shore.
It was a puppy, barely alive.
Evangeline immediately picked it up and rushed it to get treatment.
The puppy recovered quickly and became Evangeline’s constant companion.
As long as it was by her side, it would have a contented look on its face. It would smile widely in a way that was oddly comforting.
The puppy was inseparable from Evangeline. It was always by her side whether she was at home or at work.
However, every time she changed clothes, the puppy would immediately turn away, covering its eyes with its paw.
Evangeline couldn’t help but laugh. She thought that sometimes, it was more civilized and gentlemanly than some people.
The puppy grew bigger day by day. Evangeline thought it would be by her side for a long time.
But not long after, while she was on set for a street scene at night, a falling object from a great height was about to hit her.
At the critical moment, the puppy pushed her out of the way. It was struck instead. Its body was crushed beyond recognition.
In its final moments of consciousness, Joseph heard the system’s voice in his ear. “You helped Evangeline overcome her final obstacle. From now on, her life will be smooth sailing.”
Joseph, covered in blood and in excruciating pain, felt an overwhelming sense of satisfaction and joy.
The last time, he had failed to save her. He had helplessly watched as she fell before him. But this time; he had protected her.
Before losing consciousness, Joseph felt his cheek grow wet.
With the last bit of his strength, he opened his eyes and saw that it was Evangeline’s tears.
He pushed through, forcing a comforting smile as he had countless times before.
This life of his had been worth it. He was able to stay by her side, protect her, and in the end, earn her genuine tears.
Joseph closed his eyes in contentment.
From that moment on, he would never see the stars again, but the most important star in his life would be well. With that, he found peace.
