Chapter 11
But it was still too late
Joseph watched helplessly as Evangeline tell right in front of him—just one step away.
At that moment, it telt as though his heart, like a frozen lake, was violently shattered into pieces. Meanwhile, she truly shattered before him after falling from such a height.
Onlookers quickly gathered around. Some screamed, some vomited, and some called the police.
Joseph, however, was stunned.
The world around him seemed to turn into a silent movie. He couldn’t hear anything or see anything. All he could focus on was Evangeline’s broken, mangled body.
He stared at her for a long time, and then suddenly, he smiled. “I knew it. You only love me. You’d rather die than be with anyone else.”
Blood was pouring everywhere, but Joseph didn’t care. He lay down next to her lifeless form and reached out to gently hold her shattered hand.
“Look, the stars are so bright tonight. I’ll stay here with you and watch them. Eva, do you remember? I told you that you were the most precious star in my life. Everything I said was from
the heart.”
Joseph, usually so cold and distant, babbled endlessly.
The crowd around them grew larger. Their voices were filled with speculation.
“The one who jumped seemed to be the recently retired actress Evangeline Decker! And the man next to her… is Mr. Cunningham?”
“I heard Evangeline was a mistress, and Mr. Cunningham hated her. But now it looks like he’s completely lost it over her death.”
“Wait, is that Evelyn walking over? Isn’t she dating Mr. Cunningham? I saw them trending on social media recently as a couple.”
“The entertainment world is such a mess.”
“Let’s stop talking. We should respect the dead. The police will be here soon.”
Evelyn approached with shaky footsteps.
At first, she had been filled with excitement when she saw Evangeline fall.
She had only wanted to ruin Evangeline, but now the woman was dead—completely gone. There was no longer any competition.
Joseph’s reaction was terrifying.
Despite Evangeline’s body being in such a horrific state, Joseph didn’t seem to mind. He lay next to her, letting the blood and viscous yellow–white fluid stain his clothes. He held her hand, spoke softly, occasionally adjusted her hair, and even kissed her face.
Evelyn didn’t understand. After all, Evangeline had only been a stand–in. Why was Joseph reacting this way?
“Joseph…” No matter how Evelyn called out to him, he seemed not to hear. He continued speaking to Evangeline as if she were still alive.
Soon, the police arrived. They conducted their preliminary investigation and took away the overweight man.
Seeing the man flushed under the effects of the drug, Evelyn exchanged a glance with Antoine. The latter subtly gave her an “okay” gesture. Evelyn felt her worries fade away.
With Antoine on her side, she knew the situation would be handled. She wouldn’t be implicated
“Antoine.” Joseph suddenly stood up.
When Evelyn saw his expression gradually return to normal, she let out a sigh of relief. She knew that Evangeline’s death wouldn’t affect him for long. His earlier reaction had only been caused by shock.
But the next words out of Joseph’s mouth froze Evelyn completely.
“Eva’s asleep. Have someone carry her and take her home. Be gentle. Don’t let her break. And clean her up. Get a makeup artist to make her look beautiful. Also, prepare an ice bed for her. She’s tired and needs a good rest.”
Antoine stood there, stunned.
“Didn’t you hear me?”
“On it, Mr. Cunningham.”
After giving his orders, Joseph bent down gently. “Eva, just wait a little longer. We’ll be home soon.”
He assumed that Evangeline was angry with him, so she wasn’t speaking to him.
But he had his reasons for neglecting her for Evelyn. Tonight, he was going to tell her everything, once and for all
Once she knew the truth, she would forgive him and open her eyes to see him. He was sure of it.
